I would like my project to focus on the question, “Are medical melodramas simply a means of entertainment, or can viewers learn something from them?” The reason why I chose this topic is that I would like to investigate to what extent medical melodramas reflect the real state of things and how much fantasy there is in them. There are many opinions about such TV shows, and most of them are not favorable. People consider this genre unrealistic and say that it does not portray the actual way of hospitals’ functioning and medical workers’ behavior. However, there are also opinions in favor of such kinds of movies. For instance, some viewers may take invaluable lessons from medical melodramas such as House, M.D., Grey’s Anatomy, or Quincy, M.E. They may look too plain and ridiculous for medical workers, but they do contain a lot of significant educational material for laymen.
Thus, my project will be dedicated to finding out how much useful information medical melodramas contain and whether they are purely entertaining shows. I would like to investigate both sides and make a conclusion based on some scholarly arguments. So far, I believe that despite being exaggerated, medical melodramas contain a great number of tips concerning the issues of medical staff’s behavior with the patients, treatment methods, and ways of keeping the situation under control. I would like to check this hypothesis with the help of research.
After selecting the topic for investigation, I will perform some research to find relevant sources proving my thesis statement. To do that, I will use such databases as Google Search and some other websites that provide scholarly sources.
