Homeland Security plays a significant role in the development of the United States and the protection of citizens. The main mission of the department is to protect a household from terrorist attacks and prevent possible dangers which might arise in the future (White, 2016). This part of the government representative is aimed to cover many aspects of protection in the United States, and sometimes some actions become uncontrollable, causing unfavorable outcomes of terrorist attacks or natural disasters.
The Department of Homeland Security also pays attention to the issues which were caused by nature. For instance, this disaster could be flooding, earthquakes, and tsunami. According to National Strategy for Homeland Security (2007), one of the greatest natural disasters, regulated by the Department of Homeland Security, was Hurricane Katrina happened in 2005. This tragedy caused many deaths, and the government had to create quick plans to help people who had lost their homes and families. The department’s role in this problem was to conduct these helping programs and analyze how the same actions can be prevented in the future. However, the number of responsibilities became high, and the workers of Homeland Security were not able to control both problems of terrorist attacks and natural disasters.
The amount of unsolved criminal problems stays relatively high in the United States. At the same time, the workers of the Department of Homeland Security pay attention to the prevention of accidents that are not related to human activities, the number of man-made attacks increases. These problems are the majors in the department, and the responsibilities are not equally divided into departments. Consequently, inadequate addressing of problems causes the inability to cope with all the problems provided to Homeland Security by the US government.
The second problem which arises in the world of the department is the availability of weapons to almost everyone in the United States. The country consists of many diverse nations that carry their traditions and beliefs. These groups of people are not always controlled by the government as long they are not doing illegal actions (National Strategy for Homeland Security, 2007). Consequently, the potentiality of terroristic attacks stays relatively high and uncontrollable. The Department of Homeland Security has a responsibility to control the storage of weapons in households. However, this control requires trained staff who are prepared to deal with unexpected situations like spontaneous aggression.
Examples of the attacks on law enforcement can be the ordinary house calls for police help or even crimes committed in the streets. These situations are partly controlled by the Department of Homeland Security, and the overwhelming of tasks relied on the workers of this department does not show many successful outcomes of the work. The distribution of tasks is inaccurate, and both workers and ordinary citizens are suffering from the inefficient and slow work of the Homeland Security branch of the United States government.
To conclude everything that has been stated so far, the work of the Department of Homeland Security should play a significant role in the protection of citizens’ lives and control specific problems which might arise in households. To make the efficiency of the department better, the tasks should not overload and confuse workers. Consequently, if the main priority of law enforcement is the protection from terrorist attacks, it is important to pay attention to this aspect rather than spreading strength and into several tasks which are not connected.
