Introduction

In Pursuit of Excellence is a best-selling book first written by Terry Orlick in the 1990s. The book is the holy grail in field sports, emphasizing the techniques and mindsets that help both athletes and coaches achieve the heights. By delving deeper into the psychological and physiological aspects of players, the author strives to demonstrate how both external and internal forces are key to efficiency, motivation, and progress. Thus, for the athlete to become the best version of themselves, it is crucial to focus on personal excellence, training simulation, balance, and teamwork.

Lessons Learned

After reading the book, I learned countless things. For example, the first aspect I found interesting is that “when it comes to pursuing and achieving meaningful goals in any part of your life, only action counts” (Orlick, 2015, p.3). A lifetime pursuit of personal greatness offers perspective, joy, challenge, significance, focus, and frustration. As a result, to achieve excellence, there must be focus, commitment, mental readiness, positive images, confidence, control over distractions, and ongoing learning.

At the same time, the author claims that one’s “personal level of excellence will begin to flourish when [they] take the time to understand [their] best and less than best focus and make a personal commitment to respect [their] best focus more consistently” (Orlick, 2015, p.63). I agree with the writer, as I, too, believe that recognizing one’s strengths is not sufficient; it is vital to hone one’s talents. I identify closely with the mentioned qualities because I know how important they are to my own quest for growth—both personally and professionally.

Aside from mindsets, the author also stresses the importance of other aspects, which I was eager to learn more about. For example, simulating an actual performance or competition in training, practice, or a virtual performance setting is known as simulation training (Orlick, 2015). Realistic simulation training is crucial for achieving the best results in primary contests, races, games, tests, interviews, operations, speeches, and other high-performance endeavors where results matter (Orlick, 2015). I agree with this perspective, since simulation can give an individual a sense of what to expect. For instance, in my life, to prepare for job interviews, I made simulations with my friends, which helped me be better prepared for real interviews, less stressed, and more focused.

Moving forward, the author does not overlook another crucial component of success: mental well-being. It is crucial to maintain a feeling of balance in one’s life for several reasons. Continued overload without adequate rest, recuperation, or appreciation of small everyday pleasures can lead to several adverse outcomes (Orlick, 2015).

For instance, one may experience increased stress, a loss of inner harmony, a tendency to be annoyed by situations, and a decrease in focus, tolerance, or attention span (Orlick, 2015). One could feel angrier with oneself and others, especially those they love (Orlick, 2015). This is the statement I agree with the most, since many individuals sometimes forget that they are not robots and should not overexert themselves. In my experience, such situations happened often, mainly due to my studies and work. Unable to find time to relax, I soon found myself struggling with burnout.

Finally, the author moves from the micro perspective of the athlete to a macro level, where interpersonal relations are discussed. According to the author, nothing fosters team spirit more than a group of enthusiastic people who stay by each other through the highs and lows and continuous difficulties of any significant endeavor (Orlick, 2015). These individuals can include teammates, performers, athletes, or coaches (Orlick, 2015).

Team members are empowered to pursue their goals and realize their potential when they work together to support one another (Orlick, 2015). I agree with Orlick’s conclusion, since one cannot achieve success and fulfill their potential without others in their life who serve as a support system. This is consistent with my coaching philosophy, which holds that improved performance and group development result from encouraging team spirit and unity.

Overall, the book offers insightful information that emphasizes the significance of focus, practical training, life balance, and team spirit. Additionally, the work corresponds with many of my current coaching beliefs. It reminds me of the core values I already uphold, even though it might not significantly alter the way I coach. In my practice, I believe that I can incorporate these techniques to instill the best values in athletes and help them succeed.

Conclusion

In summary, the athlete must focus on their own personal greatness, as well as training, simulation, balance, and teamwork, to become the best version of themselves. I learned a great deal of things after reading the book. For instance, the first thing that struck me was that only action matters when pursuing and accomplishing worthwhile goals. The author emphasizes the importance of other factors, such as simulation training, alongside mindsets. In the future, the author ensures mental health is a critical element of success. Lastly, the author discusses interpersonal relationships from a macro perspective after shifting from the athlete’s micro perspective.
