In this course of International Relations, I have learned about the concepts and theories that are necessary for understanding the dynamics of international relations in the modern world. Thus, I am able to describe the issues that shape interactions between states in various parts of the world. In addition, I am able to recognize and explain the causes of current major problems such as terrorism. I have also learned about the influence of ongoing processes such as regionalization, globalization, economic change, and conflict on countries, policies, and regions.

The course was a good source of information concerning the role of state and non-state organizations in the contemporary world affairs. The information has enabled me to understand the influence that entities such as terrorist groups and economic organizations have on the interactions between states. As a result, I am able to explain the ways in which international relations and problems shape the US foreign policy. For instance, I have learned that the conflicts between China and its neighbors such as Japan, and the Philippines have great influence on the US foreign policy for the Asia-Pacific region.

The course has also enhanced my literacy skills. Specifically, it has enabled me to identify and interpret information in light of its cultural, political, social, and economic contexts. This has greatly improved my understanding of the factors that influence conflicts and cooperation among countries. I have also learned to use modern information and communication technologies (ICT) to conduct research on various theories that were taught in class. As a result, I can write clearly and concisely about international relations.

Perspective on World Events

The course has had a positive influence on my outlook on world events. The modern world is characterized by conflicts and rising competition for economic resources (Roskin & Berry, 2010). Consequently, several terrorist groups have emerged and most developed countries continue to arm themselves to deter any attack from their foes. However, world leaders have realized that their countries can pursue their economic and political interests in a peaceful manner. The objective of virtually all countries is to achieve economic prosperity and political stability (Roskin & Berry, 2010). In this respect, efforts are being made by leaders of major countries such as the US, China, and the UK to promote peace and tolerance at the global level. In addition, increased globalization and regionalization is likely to enhance cooperation among various countries in future. Thus, political and ideological differences are likely to have little negative influence on world events in future.

Discussion

Understanding the current international relations requires a student to use various theories and concepts to explain world events. In addition, the student has to undertake personal research in order to gain a deeper understanding of the relations between countries and the factors that shape them. In this respect, the course was effective due to two major reasons. First, it provided theoretical knowledge that guides the study of various issues and topics in the field of international relations. Second, it promoted research, which in turn facilitated access to information that is necessary to understand the dynamics of international relations in the contemporary world. In addition, group discussions allowed students to share their knowledge and experiences during the course. Consequently, I was able to achieve the expected course outcome. Moreover, I have developed a well informed perspective on various issues that influence the interactions between countries.
