Introduction
People have various differences that make them unique both in appearance and behavior. Even though most of these variations are not intentional, people have used them to oppress them without considering that they are human beings.
Interrupting Cycles of Oppression
All the above discriminations are causes of oppression to the victims and make them feel less worth to be called human beings. However, there are several corrective measures that can alleviate these problems (Burton 1). The society continues to develop since modern technology is taking over most human operations and traditions are fading away. However, discriminations continues to thrive even among the rich and educated individuals. The following ways can solve the problem of oppression among different groups of people in society.
First, the presence of allies for change is a significant issue that will help combat this problem. An ally is a member of an advantaged group who decides to resist mistreatments and start advocating for respect, change and inclusion of the oppressed groups (Rothenberg 24). Allies start supporting disadvantaged groups and encourage other oppressors to down their repression moves and live with others as brothers and sisters. Moreover, when an ally joins moves to stop racial, religious or gender discriminations there are high chances that the move will have positive results compared to when the move involves the marginalized groups (Burton 3). Therefore, allies form the first and best attempt that breaks the cycle of oppression.
Secondly, people must learn to emulate positive role models and avoid being controlled by emotions. This means that it is significant to choose a role model who embraces and advocates for an end to oppression through logical means (Burton 2). Human beings are prone to push and pull forces and when the oppressed group tries to be violent in expressing their mistreatment then their counterparts develop resistance and become extremely oppressive. This widens the discrimination gaps and limits the possibilities of agreements and understanding.
Thirdly, the disadvantaged group should focus on its abilities to show that despite their differences they can perform even better than their oppressors. Inflation, terrorism, floods, tornadoes, fire outbreaks and diseases knows no race, religion or sex. Therefore, the marginalized groups should develop their own systems to alleviate these problems and this will challenge their counterparts to seek assistance from them. The weaker group should never rely on their oppressors for help since this creates dependency and cultivates oppression.
Lastly, all living things have various responses to stimuli and this should be used to break the cycle of oppression (Burton 3). Even though, it is not easy to legislate punitive policies to guard against discriminations little attempts to do this will change the wind’s direction. The United States should make one oppression case an example to those who perpetuates this vice (Rothenberg 37). The oppressors should be punished and this message spread to all corners where oppression exists to deter other oppressors from committing this crime. All forms of oppressions should be criminalized and anyone committing them should be arrested, charged and sentenced to prison.
Conclusion
Group oppressions are mental constructs meant to give one group an upper hand over others. People must learn to coexist despite variations among them and those unwilling to live with others must be forced to understand that all human beings deserve justice and respect.
