It is important to note that the notion of censorship is a topic that is controversial when it comes to media and information sharing in general. The modern age of informational abundance gave rise to a massive spread of misinformation as a major drawback of such an environment. The rapid development of communicative technologies created a space where both accurate and inaccurate forms of information are combined together, which mandates filtering and separation of the two. However, censoring parts of the media is not an effective way to ensure the accuracy of the information available and the protection of people from misinformation. The main reason is rooted in the concept of freedom of speech and expression. The downside of censorship is its potential for abuse, where it no longer serves the interests of the public but rather the objectives and agenda of authorities or groups conducting the censoring.
In other words, the most dangerous aspect of censorship is the silencing of political and public voices, which are usually opposed to the structures of power. Enabling censorship of the media with the purpose of eradicating misinformation can quickly escalate into a transformation of free media and press into a propaganda machine, which only serves the interests of the powerful. The only counter to misinformation is accurate information manifested in openness and transparency. For example, if an individual or group engages in misinformation of the public, the appropriate countermeasure is authentic and accurate information communicated in a transparent and open manner. Misinformation is dangerous and needs to be eliminated, but it should not come at the cost of freedom of speech and the expression of the media.
