This case describes the IT infrastructure in the Lahey hospital and medical center. The goal of creating this infrastructure was to provide a high level of medical care for patients while reducing the cost of medical services. The IT infrastructure of this company is a corporate information and computer network. The high-speed data network covers 22 operating rooms and divisions of the operating unit (laboratory services, blood transfusion department, hospital administration). In total, the system is designed for 82 workplaces.
When constructing the network in the operating unit, a cable system of category 5e was used. To ensure the network’s normal operation and to protect it from the effects of electromagnetic and ionizing radiation of the operating medical equipment, the cable system was shielded. During the network’s installation, 19 points of connection of the mobile telemedicine complex were provided in various operating rooms of the surgical block. The direct high-speed network backbone, which has a throughput of 6 Gbps, is entirely built based on active Cisco equipment. The central routing switches Cisco 4500 and routers Cisco 2600 were used to create the data transmission network.
In addition, the information and computer network of the hospital is reliably protected from external intrusion using the Cisco PIX FireWall 515 firewall. The Cisco Works software is used to manage the system, including monitoring its condition and isolating failures. Thus, the IT infrastructure organized in this way allows hospital staff to use electronic technologies quickly and without interruption. This network also made it possible to create a system of telemedicine conferences for more comfortable communication.
