In 1951, many health Organizations joined to form JCAH. This included the American College of Physicians and other organizations in and outside the United States. Edwin Crosby was the first director of the association. In 1964, the Association started to charge for the survey. In 1965 the association passed that the hospitals that had been accredited by the association were able to take part in health-related programs provided by the association. Procedures were prepared that were to be used in the survey. The disabled individuals were considered in providing a survey for the mental hospitals. The survey was conducted at night and during the weekends.
The organization providing health-related services was also included in the accreditation plan. This included the organization that provided ambulatory services. The association ensured that the ambulances were effective and efficient. Home care and other organization were also surveyed. The nurses’ doctors and the administrators took part in the accreditation of the health facilities. This practice took place for some time like two or three years. In 1972 it was passed that the report on the accreditation process on health facilities was to be included in the yearly DHHS details to the congress. The advisory committee for the accreditation program was started in 1979 (Allied academies, n.d).
It was in the year 1987 that the name of the association changed to JCAHO and the headquarters of the association was opened in Chicago. The association issued a policy that prohibited smoking in health centers. The small rural hospitals were also included in the accreditation plan. The JCAHO also provided services globally by providing consultation to global clients. The main concern measurements regions that were suggested by the state hospital were considered. The quality of hospitals that were preferred by the public was also considered. The tool-free lines were established to encourage the public to call and give their view regarding the quality of the health care that was preferred. In 1999, the association won the Hammer Award. The home care and ambulatory professionals took part in the voting process. In 2003, the association started a Primary Stroke care Certification Program by collaborating with ASA.
