In the current paper, I will discuss the Texas Senate Bill 8, which is the legislation related to abortion restrictions. Bill 8 focuses on analyzing the issue of abortion-related inquiries. It highlights the authorized private civil right of action against abortion in cases when the child’s heartbeat is detected (“Texas Senate Bill 8”). The passed legislation was highly debatable due to the possible restriction of the rights and freedoms of women in choosing to give birth or not. The defense for this law is that abortion is killing a child with a detected heartbeat.
I have chosen this law because it seems pretty contradictory from the perspective of ethical values and rights protection. Being focused on the potentially good intentions, the bill can damage the general future population because women will give birth to unwanted children. From my perspective, the proofs for this law, which are presented on the official website, are weak. The main disadvantage of such an offering is that it considers no cases of individual health inquiries of women (“Texas Senate Bill 8”). As a result, the rejection of abortion can significantly damage the woman’s health. Such a law will definitely cause a high level of birth-giving stress, harming the psychological state of women. Moreover, the social integration of women accused of abortion will be significantly damaged. From a large-scale perspective, such a bill can distort the institutions of the family, bringing the fear of legal prosecution. Therefore, the bill is interesting from the standpoint of ethical considerations, which are double-natured. This law is the perfect example of how lawmakers, being centered on one moral problem, oversee more significant issues.
