Leadership is a multifaceted and multilayered concept that necessitates introspection and a thorough understanding of one’s strengths, weaknesses, and values. Individuals can gain insight into their leadership styles and effectively learn how to communicate, motivate, and inspire others through self-reflection. This paper aims to investigate the significance of self-reflection in leadership development and provide a personal account of the author’s journey of self-discovery as a leader. The critical elements of self-reflection and how they can be utilized to advance leadership effectiveness through a literature review and personal reflection. It then shows how, through self-reflection, individuals can become more effective leaders and positively impact their organizations and the world around them.

Personal Principles, Values, Beliefs, and Behaviors

Effective communication is critical to leadership and can significantly impact an organization’s success. Good leaders recognize the value of clear, effective communication and work to foster an environment that promotes open, honest, and two-way communication (Udin et al., 2019). Leaders who effectively communicate with their employees are more likely to build trust and improve relationships, leading to increased job satisfaction and motivation. Staffs who feel heard and understood are more likely to feel valued and respected, which can boost employee morale and motivation. Furthermore, by providing employees with the information they need to make informed decisions, effective communication can improve the quality of decision-making and problem-solving.

I value integrity, a critical leadership trait that enables leaders to earn their team’s trust and respect. This creates a positive and productive work environment, sets a positive example, and maintains the organization’s reputation and long-term success. When leaders act with integrity, they build trust with their teams, which is critical for effective leadership. Trust is the bedrock of any relationship, but it is especially essential in the leader-follower relationship. Team members are more likely to be engaged, motivated, and productive when they trust their leader.

I believe in empowerment as one of the most important principles in my leadership. Empowerment fosters employees’ creativity, work-life quality, teamwork spirit, and organizational effectiveness (Vu et al., 2020). Employee job satisfaction, motivation, and engagement may improve as a result of leadership empowerment, as may performance and productivity (Vu et al., 2020). Empowerment can also improve organizational innovation, creativity, problem-solving, and decision-making. Furthermore, empowerment can build trust and respect between leaders and employees, improving communication and collaboration.

Situational Leadership and Transformational Leadership

Situational leadership theory, also known as Hersey-model, Blanchard’s most effective leadership style is tailored to the followers’ developmental level. This model is based on the quantity of course and the amount of socio-emotional sustenance a leader must offer, given the state and the level of “readiness” of the follower or group (Zullo, 2020). Leaders must adjust their leadership style to match the development level of their followers. There are four distinct leadership styles directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating, which correspond to four levels of follower development: telling, selling, participating, and delegating.

Transformational leadership theory is concerned with a leadership style that emphasizes rousing and inspiring followers to reach their full potential. Transformational leaders inspire followers to look beyond their interests and pursue a higher goal or vision. According to this theory, transformational leaders can instill a logic of purpose and sense in their followers, resulting in increased commitment and engagement (Ladkin et al., 2022). Transformational leaders are also regarded as role models, inspiring and motivating their followers to be the best versions of themselves.

Both theories take different approaches, and each has its benefits and drawbacks. Situational leadership theory is best suited for organizations with well-defined tasks and procedures and followers at various stages of development. Transformational leadership theory works best in organizations that need to change and innovate and where followers are motivated by a sense of purpose and a shared vision. Transformational leadership is the most effective and approachable when aligned with my leadership principles.

Transformational leadership aligns with my leadership beliefs and principles in that it encourages communication, relationships, and the sharing of ideas. It improves my leadership intelligence after I interact with my subjects. This has helped me understand how they do things, talk, and even present their ideas and express themselves. This allows for a more fluid flow of events and improved communication. Situational leadership is not aligned with my principle of leadership in that it does not allow the employees to express themselves but to follow what the leader is saying limiting, innovation, creativity, and a good relationship between my employees and myself.

Comparison of Bill Gates’ Leadership Style and My Leadership Style

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is widely regarded as a transformational leader. He is well-known for inspiring and motivating his team to reach their full potential and instilling a sense of purpose and a shared vision within the organization. He remarkably matches my leadership principles in applying transformational leadership in that one of Gates’ key management features is his ability to stimulate and motivate others. He has instilled a shared vision within Microsoft, and his enthusiasm for technology has spread to those around him ( Bill Gates Leadership Style, n.d.). Gates was well-known for his ability to instill a sense of purpose and shared vision in his team. He instilled excitement and passion in the team about the company’s mission and goals, which helped motivate and inspire them.

Furthermore, Gates is renowned for encouraging creativity and innovation within the organization. He is credited with establishing a culture of experimentation and risk-taking at Microsoft, which has resulted in the development of some of the company’s most successful products. Gates is credited with fostering a culture of innovation and risk-taking at Microsoft. This duty to society is also a quality of integrity because it demonstrates a commitment to changing the world for the better rather than focusing solely on oneself.

Modeling ethical behavior; transformational leaders can strengthen their ethical leadership by modeling ethical behavior. According to (Jackson, 2019), leaders who consistently demonstrate ethical behavior are more likely to foster an ethical culture within their organization. For example, the Journal of Business Ethics study discovered that leaders who modeled ethical behavior had employees who reported higher levels of ethical behavior within the organization. Encourage ethical decision-making among followers: Transformational leaders can improve their ethical leadership by encouraging ethical decision-making. This can be achieved by fostering an environment that values ethical considerations and providing followers with the tools and resources necessary to make ethical decisions. For example, the Journal of Business Ethics discovered that leaders who encouraged ethical decision-making had employees more likely to report advanced levels of ethical behavior within the organization.

Promoting a culture of trust and transparency: Transformational leaders can strengthen their ethical leadership by fostering a culture of trust and transparency within their organizations. This can be accomplished by being transparent in decision-making, accepting feedback, and encouraging open communication within the organization. Leaders can empower employees and teams to take ownership of their work and make decisions that align with the organization’s goals and values by providing resources and support for projects. Project funding also enables leaders to identify and address critical areas of need or opportunity within the organization and to allocate resources accordingly.

Listening also is one aspect that I will incorporate to improve my leadership skills. Building trust is one of the most significant ways that listening enhances leadership. A sense of trust and improved communication within the team are created when leaders actively listen to their team members and show that they regard and respect their opinions and ideas. This is essential for developing a capable team that is strong and cohesive. According to a 2019 study titled “Leadership that listens: The power of active listening,” active listening is one of the main components in establishing trust among team members since it fosters a sense of security and support. Additionally, listening can help team members work together more effectively. It fosters a culture where everyone feels heard and respected when team leaders actively listen to the opinions and ideas of their team members. As a result, team members may work more cohesively and cooperatively, which could improve problem-solving and decision-making.

Conclusion

In conclusion, overall self-evaluation is an essential aspect of leadership development. It enables leaders to better understand their strengths and weaknesses and make positive changes to improve their leadership skills and effectiveness. Self-assessment also serves as a foundation of inspiration as by performing it, leaders can trail their progress, and their achievements will be a motivator. It thus enables leaders to adjust themselves accordingly. Finally, it also aids their development as more ethical and inclusive leaders.
