I interpret leadership as a special position within a social group, which involves exerting influence on other individuals for the subsequent achievement of goals. I have also analyzed many definitions and studies of leadership, and leadership does not imply a hierarchical position in an organization. Moreover, authentic leadership draws its power from social influence but not from formal authority. I believe that leadership is an art, the ability to encourage others to follow and achieve a common purpose or mission harmoniously. Similarly, only through the influence of authentic authority and faith in people is it possible to create a group of followers under a conscious power, not formal coercion to specific actions.

Furthermore, I consider that a leader is supposed to observe and correctly interpret the emotions, motivation, and intentions of colleagues and subordinates. Developed emotional intelligence, as one of the flexible skills, helps to manage his own and others’ emotions. Moreover, a leader should not need external incentives, but be proactive in motivating others. Besides, a confident leader should be honest, because he is a guarantor of trust for subordinates (Northouse, 2021). A good leader must also have sufficient negotiation abilities and each type of opponent requires a different negotiation strategy.

It is also significant to mention that my understanding of leadership is in line with the basic principles of authentic leadership. That is because this style of leadership is defined by sincere, self-conscious and open leaders. For example, authentic leaders inspire those they lead by staying true to their ideals (Northouse, 2021). They have a strong moral code and are capable of being reasonable and resilient in the face of adversity. Accordingly, my definition of leadership attempts to follow the basic principles of this style.
