Counseling is a highly important practice for military families as they face various problems that are difficult to overcome. Long periods of separation might negatively affect all family members. The example presented in the video demonstrates possible negative outcomes of long deployment (KPBS News, 2011). The case of the Callaghans is also very illustrative of this problem. After a long separation, the relationships between the members of this family became significantly worse. The couple could not solve their problems, and it caused serious tension. The main goal of this paper is to discuss this case to suggest methods that can help to improve their difficult situation.
This is a widespread issue, and certain measures might be taken to address it. The main goals this couple has to set are the evaluation of several specific areas that might be affected by a long deployment and maintaining the stability of their relationships. It is necessary to determine the most significant aspects. First, deployment experience might cause psychological damage that ruins the stability of relationships. Second, the constant anxiety, stress, and dissatisfaction that are caused by long periods of separation might result in depression. Such conditions might also lead to drug abuse. A large number of military officers and soldiers use narcotic drugs as a coping mechanism during the deployment (Hall, 2016). Third, another important factor is communication between spouses. Fourth, a common problem caused by long separation is physical or emotional infidelity. Fifth, another important aspect is finance. Problems related to financial difficulties often provoke heated arguments. Spouses have to be able to emphasize their needs and find ways to meet them. Finally, changes in behaviors of children are necessary to control. Poor academic outcomes, dropouts, and stress might be caused by long deployments as well.
To accomplish the counseling goals mentioned above, it is necessary to apply cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). This therapy is based on the concept that describes how the way of thinking affects people’s feelings and behaviors (Hall, 2016). CBT helps individuals understand the connection between negative interpretations of problematic situations and behavioral patterns. Hence, several methods should be used to address the couple’s problems. First, it is necessary to pay attention to all changes that occur over time. The mentioned above areas have to be constantly and carefully monitored. Therefore, these issues will be discussed in detail during the six-week counseling course. Second, their situation is very tense, and the couple needs to reach the balance. Hence, the meetings will also be aimed at finding compromises regarding parenthood and the relationships between the family members. Finally, it is necessary to relieve the tension. The couple is confused due to a long period of pointless arguments. Therefore, we will be working on relaxation and cultivating positive morale. Also, some additional methods can be very helpful. For example, the couple might discuss their concerns not only with each other but also with other military families that deal with similar problems.
In conclusion, many families are faced with the same difficulties. However, various counseling programs aim at improving their situations. Mutual support, patience, and understanding help to reach goals that such couples set. It is highly necessary to clearly understand the main areas that are at risk of being affected by the long separation that military families experience during deployment.
