The prevalence and incidence of major depressive disorder (MDD) necessitate holistic intervention for positive health outcomes. The World Health Organization categorizes depression as a major contributor to disability globally (WHO, 2021). Gutiérrez et al. (2020) explained MDD as highly comorbid with mental and physical health issues, affecting everyone regardless of age or social status. Hooley at al. (2020) affirmed that depression heightens the adverse effects of the stressors that precipitate poor mental health. Dwayne Johnson, The Rock, opened up about his struggle with depression, which Izadi (2018) writes about. MDD takes a toll on health and well-being, and should be effectively managed.
Recognizing the signs and symptoms of MDD informs early treatment. Symptoms include suicidal ideation, impaired concentration, fatigue, feelings of guilt, restlessness, and isolation. In terms of mental and physical fatigue, Johnson attested that “Struggle and pain are real. I was devastated and depressed” (Izadi, 2018). Hooley at al. (2020) asserted that lack of social support and social isolation increase the risk of depression. In this context, Johnson mentioned that it took him “a long time to realize it but the key is to not be afraid to open up” (Izadi, 2018). Therefore, understanding the symptoms of MDD can help determine people at risk for developing the mental problem.
Despite the incidence rate of MDD, it often goes undiagnosed and untreated, especially among older adults. Furthermore, perceived mental health stigma among friends, family and the public of people with MDD affects help-seeking behavior. Consequently, it leads to social withdrawal, stigma, low productivity, and poor performance. Communities can reduce the burden of MDD through targeted action against health disparities and stigma. Most importantly, a social support system fosters hope, self-awareness, and self-esteem, in turn, lowering depression levels. MDD affects mood and normal body function and early treatment options ranging from lifestyle to medication can lead to positive mental health outcomes.
