Introduction
The Reformation period saw significant changes in religious and socio-political life. The growing economic and religious crises in society required urgent addressing, which became the main reason for the Reformation. Its significant figures include John Calvin, Martin Luther, and Huldrych Zwingli, who contributed significantly to the conceptualization of Christianity and its role in human life. Therefore, this paper reviews articles on these reformers’ contributions in shaping the sixteenth century’s religious background.
Murza’s Article
The article by Murza (2021) analyzes the different approaches to the Reformation in Europe at the beginning of the sixteenth century. Martin Luther was one of the most active supporters of the separation of politics and religion. In developing the Doctrine of Two Kingdoms, Martin Luther emphasized the importance of curtailing the church’s powers and redirecting its resources to society’s needs (Murza 2021).
In his perception, the church began to occupy too significant a role in managing society, influencing all its aspects. However, the diminishing role of the church is not associated with the leveling of the importance of religion. Martin Luther’s ideas centered on the need to reduce the powers of religious authorities as an institution.
Other reformers, like Huldrych Zwingli, broadly criticized the concepts Luther put forward. Even though Luther and Zwingli did not accept each other’s ideas, they had many standard views. For example, both argued that religious truth resided only in Holy Scripture, not in Tradition, and demanded the secularization of church lands (Murza 2021). Hence, both reformers recognized the importance of reducing the church’s institutional influence on socio-political processes.
Pillay and McMillan’s Article
Pillay and McMillan (2019) analyze the historical and social context of the Reformation that shaped Zwingli’s views and his contribution to social change. One of Zwingli’s most notable contributions is promoting education among all sections of the population and making education accessible to women (Pillay and McMillan 2019). The authors emphasize that the reformer’s view conveyed social change and was aimed at protecting women’s position in society.
An essential aspect of Zwingli’s work is his relationship with his contemporaries. The authors highlight the importance of Zwingli’s ideas about the relationship between church and state and their influence on shaping the religious context of the Reformation period (Pillay and McMillan 2019). Moreover, comparing different views within a given period helps comprehensively evaluate the diversity of opinions during the Reformation.
Conclusion
In conclusion, both articles contribute to a deep understanding of the Reformation’s ideas and the roles of key figures in shaping societal change. The authors provide a detailed analysis of the historical and social contexts that shaped the views of Martin Luther and Huldrych Zwingli. By highlighting the diversity of opinions and debates between reformers, the articles convey the complex nature of the period. At the same time, the authors of both texts demonstrate an everyday basis of ideas embedded in the need to limit the power of the Catholic Church at the expense of the state.
