Introduction
Relations between colonists and Indians worsened significantly as settlers took land from local tribes. Mary Rowlandson, who was kidnapped by Native Americans yet returned later for a ransom, provided an extensive account of this period of turmoil (Greenblatt and Christ 268). Mrs. Rowlandson’s religious faith and determination enabled her to endure the entire ordeal.
Analysis of Mary Rowlandson’s Narrative
First, the captive expressed her interest in the new civilization after the initial shock had subsided. She understood that her assailants were in a dire situation, despite describing them at first as “a company of hellhounds” (Greenblatt and Christ 270). She realized they had endured hardships akin to those in her colony. Although it did not make her sympathize with the tribe, it allowed Rowlandson to perceive them differently.
Mrs. Rowlandson disagreed with Native Americans’ actions, yet saw the reasons behind their attitudes that led to such behavior. Eventually, she observed the human side of these people, their rituals for mourning, and their struggles for food (Greenblatt and Christ 296). Although Rowlandson continued to attribute such behavior to the Devil’s influence, she knew them as lost people without the knowledge of proper faith.
Mrs. Rowlandson’s beliefs enabled her to survive this experience and write about it for the world to see. According to her, it was “a divine plan,” as she accepted her fate and chose not to be consumed by hatred (Greenblatt and Christ 268). Her recitals of bible verses and constant reminders of God’s mercy kept her in a sound state of mind regardless of circumstances.

In conclusion, Mrs. Rowlandson’s writing regarding her traumatic past enabled the world to see the other side of the conflict without the author’s judgment being clouded by hostility. This source of information provided insight into the tribes’ traditions and lifestyle and served as a motivation for people to seek God in times of crisis. This account made it apparent that compassion was not entirely lacking among the natives, yet their actions were dictated by their hardships.
