Introduction

In this module, I learned how to develop a speech for an oral presentation, the different types of speeches, the proper techniques for using graphs and charts, and other visual elements. One of the most crucial components is speech preparation, and a speaker may attempt to create the speech word for word. However, remembering a speech word for word is not an efficient method of speech preparation. Importantly, preparing the speech is comparable to composing a college essay. In this reflection paper, I will discuss public speaking and communication strategies and techniques that I did not know before.

The Art of Oral Presentation

Process Stages

From my perspective, it was beneficial to understand how to prepare for a speech. The process consists of four essential stages: determining the purpose, selecting central points, writing an appealing opening, and concluding on a high note. Additionally, there are several options for delivering the oral presentation.

Speech Types

Extemporaneous speaking is the most popular form of delivering oral presentations. It entails reading from notes, an outline, or using visual aids. The act of presenting suddenly or without preparation is known as impromptu speaking. This strategy should only be used for an entire speech if the speaker has a firm knowledge of the presentation topic.

Speaking from a manuscript is uncommon at a face-to-face classroom presentation. While reading from a script may appear simple, it increases the likelihood of losing contact with the audience. Ultimately, speaking from memory might be the most challenging presentation approach. Memorizing a speech offers less presenting freedom than an extemporaneous speech.

Audience and Appearance

I discovered that understanding the audience is essential for an effective presentation. For instance, I should define the terms if I use technical terminology. It is also vital to avoid using words that may offend individuals of various races, ages, and disabilities. The external appearance of the speaker is significant in judging whether or not they are a trustworthy authority to discuss the chosen topic. While we may believe that judging by looks is unethical, inappropriate style may irritate the audience.

The Role of Visual Aids in Oral Presentation

I want to emphasize the importance of visual aids since they may significantly enhance an oral presentation. Visual aids can also be utilized to underline the speaker’s information to the audience or to keep them concentrated on the topic. Slideshows, handouts, and objects are examples of visual aids. These elements are excellent instruments for improving my public speaking.

Nevertheless, it is vital to remember that too many visual aids might distract the audience from the speech. The text on the slides should include highlights or brief comments on the crucial details that the speaker will cover during the presentation. Images, graphs, illustrations, or other visuals should help the audience grasp the main ideas.

I also discovered that handouts are an excellent visual tool, especially if I want members of my audience to retain knowledge long after the speech has ended. I may employ a physical object or model if my presentation is centered on a demonstration. It is critical to ensure that every audience member can see the item.

Conclusion

To conclude, the audience is critical in every oral presentation. I will apply this knowledge to improve my public speaking and communication skills. For instance, I can improve my skills if I receive feedback on my speech and visuals. Moreover, a successful presentation requires preparation and familiarity with the audience or environment in which the speech is delivered. Visual aids can be used, but they should supplement rather than replace the presentation.
