Describe McCloskey’s economic rhetoric and compare it with literary narrative
Economics is one of the disciplines that changes all the time due to the presence of some new factors which may define its quality and impact.
There are many people who tried to contribute to the sphere of economics, still, not all ideas may be now considered as the correct one. Still, the approaches of particular researchers deserve attention. For example, Deidre McCloskey’s contributions deserve attention. He is an economics professor who made a powerful attempt to critique the methodology in the sphere of economy to underline the idea of logical positivism in the field of philosophy.
The point is that any economic theory may be introduced by a person in order to accept or, vice versa, reject the ideas and their plausibility, and McCloskey admits that economics itself cannot understand itself properly, this is why the perception of the ideas should be based on the criterion according to which a person pursue the purpose set or not.
Without any doubts, such person like McCloskey is properly skilled in the field of rhetoric, and his strong point is the possibility to evaluate the philosophical ideas and approaches to prove the correctness of the ideas.
As a result of his achievements, he introduces his own Ten Commandments (prediction, measurement, control, importance of observation, etc) which are regarded as important still not critically accepted rules to be followed. In comparison to such McCloskey’s economic rhetoric, literary narrative has a number of differences.
First, rhetoric aims at persuading the audience, and literary narrative helps to comprehend the truth and define the peculiarities of the main idea. Second, it is not enough for literary narrative to underline the facts but involve the readers into the story and make them believe their importance or, at least, take a lesson. Finally, literary narrative differs from economic rhetoric due to its impartiality: narration is not about persuasion but description that helps to define the truth.
Similarities between economic narrative of storytelling and film narrative
Film narrative is a type of a story that contains a number of production and story elements; in other words, the story itself and the process of how it is told to the audience are considered the main factors of film narrative. Economic narrative of storytelling does not focus on the process but on the story itself.
The ideas introduced in The Rhetoric of Economics by McCloskey like the necessity not to speak into the void but become social or focus on articulation the reason in addition to proper delivery of personal beliefs or disbeliefs show that economists do not find it necessary to consider the details of details of their work and influence of the audience. They understand that it is enough to introduce the idea and underline its urgency and they make use of personal experience.
Film narrative is similar to such type of economic narration. The main purpose of film narrative is to prove that there are a number of themes to be discussed and there are a number of methods to be used to achieve the best results in narrating.
However, the point is that it is not always possible to choose the most appropriate method of narration; this is why it is better to rely on personal understanding of the situation and develop the field of economics or the film itself by means of personal ideas, positions, and skills. Only in case person attitude is considered in narration, both film or economic, the success of the chosen action will be possible.
