Introduction
Since the media is so important in forming public opinion, it is essential to recognize the biases and influences that it carries. While some platforms tend to be more right-wing, others are left-wing or a combination of both. Among the well-known media platforms are the Idaho Press and the New York Times. The Idaho Press generally reflects a more conservative viewpoint, whereas the New York Times is inclined toward a liberal perspective.
Idaho Press
Starting with the Idaho Press, the news source offers event coverage in and out of the state. An informal content analysis reveals that the Idaho Press tends toward the Right of Center (RC). In one news piece, the journalist reflects on how, after one politician published a newsletter criticizing other legislators, the leader of the Idaho Senate dismissed her from her position as vice chairman of a committee (Guido, 2023). Other news pieces and editorials emphasize a more conservative view and right-leaning ideologies.
New York Times
In turn, the New York Times covers a broader spectrum of events. After analyzing its news coverage and editorials, it appears the platform leans toward the Left of Center (LC). In one article, the authors discuss how, in response to claims that one of Donald Trump’s fellow defendants in the election meddling suit in Georgia had been harassing witnesses, Georgia prosecutors requested the court to revoke the defendant’s release (Hakim & Fausset, 2023). Harrison Floyd, the accused party, has been charged with intimidating witnesses and other defendants (Hakim & Fausset, 2023). In this case, the source tends to advocate for progressive policies, values, and justice.
Media Bias Chart
One tool for visualizing biases across different media sources is the media bias chart. Idaho Press is positioned Right of Center (RC) in this paper due to having a moderately conservative slant. The New York Times, on the other hand, is Left of Center (LC) since it has a moderate liberal tendency. The overall tone and reputation informed my decisions about the platforms.
Conclusion
In summary, the New York Times and Idaho Press are two prominent media outlets. The New York Times tends toward a liberal viewpoint, whilst the Idaho Press tends to be more conservative. The Idaho Press leans to the right of the center, according to an informal content analysis. Furthermore, the New York Times research indicates that the source should be on the left of the center.
