Mental Health
Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden direct the comedy-drama It’s a Funny Story. The 2010 movie is an adaptation of the 2006 book of the same name by Ned Vizzini (Fleck & Boden, 2010). Vizzini’s own brief hospital stay in November 2004 for depression served as the impetus for the novel (Fleck & Boden, 2010). Craig Gilner, an adolescent suffering from depression and thoughts of suicide, is the protagonist of the novel (Fleck & Boden, 2010).
The pressure to perform academically is overwhelming, Craig, so he checks himself into a mental health facility for support (Fleck & Boden, 2010). There, Craig meets Noelle, approximately his age (Fleck & Boden, 2010). The young man attends therapy, sings, sketches, and assists Bobby, another character, in practicing for an interview (Fleck & Boden, 2010). Throughout the film, one can see recurrent themes connected to mental health, specifically stigma, struggles, and fear, coupled with the need to foster empathy, open communication, and human connection.
Diversity
John Lennon is a well-known songwriter and performer whose songs are known for their deep meaning and significance. For example, “Imagine,” released in 1971 during the height of the Vietnam War, is a song from John Lennon’s original solo album that invites listeners to envision a world at peace and togetherness (Lennon, 1971). In the song, John Lennon paints a picture of an ideal society free from racial, religious, or ideological divides.
“No need for greed or hunger / A brotherhood of man / Imagine all the people / Sharing all the world” (Lennon, 1971, line 16). Through the lyrics, the author intends to inspire people to live in harmony and build a more inclusive society. The audience can clearly see the theme of diversity reverberate throughout the lines, as Lennon strives to promote equality among individuals and break down barriers.
