In the article by Markusoff published in 2019 and titled “The rise of Alberta’s unapologetic petro-patriots,” Albertans’ attitudes towards the energy industry and environmental concerns are considered. The residents of Alberta have become highly supportive of this segment of the economy that contributes substantially to the region’s development. Thousands of people are involved in oil production and related industries, and they express their dissatisfaction with various restrictions imposed by the government. These restrictions are supported by environmentalists who want the reduction of the adverse effects of the industry. The situation in Alberta is exemplary as it illustrates the global discussion of the problem. Some claim that people need to reduce their environmental imprint that leads to alarming effects and major shifts in the development of the planet. Others stress that the input is insignificant and the proposed (and imposed) restrictions are harmful to the economy, which may have dramatic effects on countries and the entire humanity.

The truth is that the major point to be accepted is the fact that opponents do not hear each other and do not understand that their argument is groundless. Both groups accept that environment is essential, and trade (as well as industries) is equally important. In his article published in 2012, Huber stresses that energy production is not confined to petroleum or gas, as many associated industries use this resource.

One of the critical things to remember is that energy production is one of the important industries that facilitate the development of human society. People need oil and gas production as it supports the automobile industry, pharmaceutical companies, agriculture, and so on. However, it is also pivotal to remember that oil and gas are not central natural resources but some of the existing alternatives. It is necessary to view these industries as any other segment of the economy that can bring some damage environmentally or socially. Nevertheless, these productions contribute to the economic growth of communities.

People need to listen to each other and hear each other’s arguments. No one is dirty or clean as there is no black and white in this world. There is no denying that any industry can harm the environment, but it is also impossible to state that industries led to climate change. Progress is associated with some consequences that can be minimized. However, the negotiation and debate concerning this minimization effort cannot be held in the format that emerged in Alberta. Wearing a jacket with some signs (against or in favor of oil production) is unlikely to help people to solve existing issues. It is more productive to discuss the benefits of industries, possible negative effects, ways to minimize them, but it is essential to remain reasonable. Excessive restrictions lead to slower economic development, which affects people’s wellbeing. The extreme greed of large corporations also results in multiple negative effects for the future of individuals and communities. Some groups’ attempts to control oil prices are a good example of this greed.

In conclusion, it is necessary to note that the situation in Alberta shows the immaturity of people and their inability to focus on solutions rather than particular interests. It is clear that collaboration is the key to the sustainable development of human society. Being reasonable and creative has helped people innovate and bring to life projects that make the world a better place for millions.
