In particular, users are interested in hair care products, as they are used both at home and professionally. An increasing number of women are looking for products that will help restore and maintain the condition of their hair. One of the most popular products is Olaplex No. 3 and K18 masks, which have captured the beauty and care market over the past few years. This work aims to compare these products based on three criteria: ingredients, price, and results, to determine which one is more effective and better meets the needs of consumers.
The intended audience for this analysis is predominantly female and interested in the beauty industry. These may be women over 18 who are frequent shoppers at stores such as Sephora and Ulta Beauty. In addition, specialists, both men and women, who use these products on their clients may be interested in them.
One of the main reasons the target audience is interested in purchasing Olaplex vs. K18 is that it offers the opportunity to achieve salon results at home. Both manufacturers claim that these masks can reduce frizz, smooth hair, and make it shinier. Their peculiarity is that they are Bond-building treatments; that is, they penetrate the molecular level and target the innermost layer of hair to strengthen and repair from the inside out. In Fig. 1, the release forms of Olaplex and K18 products are shown.
Ingredients
First of all, it is necessary to pay closer attention to the composition of each of the studied products. K18 has a reasonably small composition, but it also contains both beneficial and quite harmful components for the body. Thus, the main active components of this product are Polysorbate 20 and sh-Oligopeptide-78, which work at the molecular level to restore hair’s structural proteins while forming strong disulfide bonds that protect against future heat, bleach, or chemical services (Cook).
In addition, another essential ingredient is hydrolyzed wheat starch, which also has a conditioning effect. However, among the harmful components are fragrance, synthetic preservative Phenoxyethanol, and “Behentrimonium chloride, benzyl alcohol, geraniol, linalool, and hexyl cinnamon” (Cook). The presence of these chemicals significantly increases the extent of harm K18 causes to the body.
Olaplex No. 3, unlike K18, has a broader list of ingredients used in its production. It contains a “bond-building ingredient, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, which penetrates the hair and rebuilds those damaged bonds” (Shaw). In addition, it includes vitamins C, E, and A, as well as Panthenol, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, and Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein. Despite these functional components, Olaplex also contains Butylphenyl Methylpropional, a fragrance that can harm humans. The advantage of this product is that most of the company’s products are vegan, cruelty-free, pH-balanced, gluten- and nut-free, paraben-free, Phthalate- and phosphate-free.
Price
Price is one of the main determinants of customers’ product choice. In this context, most customers prefer Olaplex, as it retails for $30.00 US dollars and contains 100mL of product compared to the competitors. However, if individuals have longer hair, this hair treatment requires more product per use due to its thinner consistency. People can also purchase the Bonus Size No. 3 Olaplex Hair Perfector 250mL/8.5 fl. oz to repair and strengthen dry or damaged hair for $60.00. Moreover, it is worth noting that this mask can be found at local drugstores, Sephora, Ulta Beauty, and online stores.
On the other hand, K18 is more expensive than Olaplex No. 3, priced at $75.00 for a full-size 50 mL bottle. This price point becomes relatively high for a large cluster of buyers, since if they have the same 100 ms in Olaplex, they will have to pay $150. It is underlined that “there are no active ingredients in this formulation that can be found with clinical backing for, which is surprising, especially given the price point” (Cook). These simple calculations support rejecting K18 and favoring a competitor in this area, especially given its similar hair-smoothing, repairing, and strengthening abilities. One of the benefits is that K18 is vegan, color-safe, cruelty-free, and pH-optimized.
Results
When considering such a criterion as results, it is necessary, first of all, to pay attention to the methods of application, since Olaplex and K18 differ in this regard. Hence, the first is “pre-shampoo treatment, so you apply it to damp hair before shampooing – leaving a generous amount of the creamy product combined through for 10 minutes” (Wiesel). It is perfect for all hair types and penetrates the hair, rebuilding damaged bonds.
The main advantage this product offers is the elimination of the need to wash your hair repeatedly. Clients can apply it, style their hair as usual, and go about their day. The results of using Olaplex No. 3 are more than satisfactory, as it provides soft, shiny, strong, and healthy hair after just one use, based on personal experience.
K18 uses a different application method for Olaplex No. 3, which is its main difference. People need to “apply it to freshly shampooed strands, skipping the conditioner, and after, towel dry the hair and apply the concentrated cream” (Wiesel). In other words, it is a leave-in treatment that requires mandatory flushing after use. After use, the mask has a detangling effect, promoting smoother, stronger, more conditioned hair.

Based on my analysis of the sources, I concluded that Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector offers more advantages to consumers than the K18 Biometric Hair Science treatment. The primary determinant is the product’s price, as it can be decisive in customers’ choices. This is especially important given that both masks are bond-repairing treatments aimed at restoring the hair’s structure at the molecular level.
Among the formulations, K18 also loses to Olaplex, as it contains more harmful ingredients that can harm individuals’ bodies. However, this product’s formula is more potent than Olaplex, has a thicker consistency, and requires less product. Yet, the price point is higher than Olaplex’s, and it does not offer various sizes. In conclusion, this paper recommends purchasing Olaplex No. 3 because consumers get more product than with K18, save money, and achieve faster results.
