I reviewed an article published by Siudak et al. (2018), which examined the relationship between patient education and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Siudak et al. (2018) aimed to analyze the effect of a smoking cessation program using the population of patients with acute myocardial infarction. Constant education about smoking cessation resulted in 50% of patients quitting smoking after six months. I applied the seven steps of statement analysis by Walker and Avant (2019) to the statement, “constant patient education helps to quit smoking.” The primary insight from the statement analysis was that there is a strong positive correlation between smoking cessation and the presence of constant patient education in patients with acute myocardial infarction.

My current idea about the theoretical foundation is that there is a positive correlation between prevention and patient education. Since smoking cessation is a secondary prevention measure for ischemic events, the article by Siudak et al. (2018) confirms that there is a positive correlation between the two concepts. In other words, patient education about the harms of smoking and the strategies for quitting smoking encourages patients to quit smoking to reduce the risk of reoccurrence of ischemic events. The nursing metaparadigm described by McEwen and Wills (2019) is closely related to the statement. The implication of these correlations is that there may be a positive correlation between prevention and patient education only if qualified nurses provide education to the relevant patients in the right environment. As a result of patient education and adherence to prevention measures, the health of patients can be improved.
