Discussion about perceptual abilities in a human being

Perception has a relationship with the sensory neurons. An infant’s nervous system is immature. His optic nerve is very thin and short compared to an adult optic nerve. It is not fully myelinated. So at the infant stage visual sensation is less. At this stage, the eye is half in size and weight of an adult. So the retina and the lens are closer in this stage. It also makes the vision as difficult. So in this stage, the pattern and form of perception are different from an adult. (The Perceptual Abilities of Babies)

With this law, visual power infant babies look into the facial pattern and moving objects rather than nonfacial patterns and stationary objects. When we see an infant baby, he or she looks into our face. Immediately after birth neonates start to respond to the sound. According to Mills and Melhuish, a three weeks old baby feels his mother’s voice when he opts to suck on a nipple. Same as the auditory ability an infant have the olfactory and tasting ability. An infant can have the ability to identify two identical objects by vision and touching. (Maturation and Development of Physical Capabilities). (Hales, 253).

My neighbor has a baby. He is eight-month-old. His name is Tomin. One day I took him to my home. After some time his mother comes to my home to bring him. She hides behind the window and calls his name. He identify her sound and crawl on the knees to the side from where his mother’s sound he heard.

Perception of pain is also different from one to another. It depends on the mental capacity. Different people use different techniques to overcome or forget the painful experience. Normally the pain is related to the brain. At a particular time what the brain recognizes is controlled by the brain itself. The brain filters the incoming sensations and concentrates on the most important ones among the different sensations. (Reiness). There is emotional and physical pain. Different techniques are used for reducing both kinds of pain. To reduce physical pain techniques like injection, anesthesia, different kind of therapy, etc are used. The major reason for physical pain is injury. Emotional pain is occurred mainly due to stress and anxiety. Emotional pain can reduce by using the techniques like counseling, meditation, massaging, spirituality, etc.

When I am studying in 6th standard I had an eye problem. My vision ability is reduced day by day with pain. Doctors told to my parents that there is a chance of becoming a blind after few years. It hearted me very much. I am very depressed. Due to worry about my future, I forgot the eye pain. At that time I went for counseling. It helps to reduce my emotions related to my eye problem. In my perception, this counseling is very effective to reduce emotional pain and fear.

Conclusion

From the above-mentioned things, it is clear that each and everyone has perceptual ability. Many factors influence one’s perception. Mental growth influences perception. It helps to differentiate things and select the best one from the surrounding.
