Introduction

Some say professionalism at work is a big deal, and it sure is. Professionalism can entail many things, such as teamwork, etiquette, equality, respect, and much more. However, many articles believe incorporating aspects like commitment to lifelong learning, integrity, empathy, and maintaining a balance between personal and professional is essential and should be used between business practitioners and their customers (Rowland, 2016). These aspects are beneficial as they provide a friendly customer environment and a positive customer service representation. Moreover, this paper studies three articles that determine how such reports can help one achieve business etiquette, ethics, teamwork, and positive workplace behavior.

Professionalism is a concept that many organizations uphold as it ensures that all individuals function according to the expected standards. Rowland (2016) states that professionalism in organizations promotes positive work behaviors. It helps different businesses achieve their goals successfully and smoothly. Rowland (2016), therefore, proposes a comprehensive model for defining professionalism to allow its adoption in a range of professions. He says that professionalism contains five factors personal identity, standards, initiative, compassion, and diversity orientation.

Professionalism, therefore, becomes a key concept through which the five factors can be achieved. For example, diversity orientation is the ability of a business to hire “far from home,” in other words, hire people from different backgrounds, religions, and cultures to create a more open workplace environment. This then establishes room for compassion towards these people and what they may have to understand and learn from compared to what someone else might realize or have already learned.

Hence, it encourages and establishes standards for handling different situations together. Moreover, Cruess and Cruess (2012) define professionalism as an aspect intertwined with ethical behaviors. According to Sharma (2013), ethical behaviors in the workplace are the key to fostering positive relationships and enhancing employee productivity. Collaboration, a factor suitable for developing a successful business, is included in a firm by ethics and professionalism, making it a fit environment for everyone. Managers are in charge of ensuring all workers utilize these aspects in the workplace.

Encouraging Positive Workplace Behaviors

Professionalism is the key to encouraging positive workplace behavior. A great example is when a salesperson decides to help a customer who needs a commodity way off their budget and, as a result, becomes discouraged and angry. However, a salesperson can brighten the situation by simply accommodating them to find something similar or referring the customer to another store with an item they initially desired. By doing so, the salesperson incorporates professionalism through ethical behaviors and etiquette, and the customer will leave satisfied and fulfilled that they got the help they wanted. It will bring positive energy to the company as other employees and consumers will trust these salespeople. To achieve this type of professionalism with the incorporation of ethics, one should develop traits like willingness to learn, integrity, empathy, and good communication skills.

Conclusion

In conclusion, “Teaching Professionalism” by Cruess and Cruess, “Encouraging Positive Workplace Behavior” by Sharma, and “What is Professionalism” by Rowland are the three articles that thrive on helping business practitioners gain positive workplace behavior. It guarantees that performance meets the required standards of professionalism, including growth in learning, ethics, and integrity. Business executives and their staff should maintain a healthy balance between their personal and professional lives.
