Introduction
In this world, people work in different places. In the places where they work, they hold different titles. One can be the president, vice president, accountant, human resource manager, secretary, massager, cleaner, garden boy among others in an organization. This paper discusses a person whose job title makes him or her fall in the category of peons. It first explains who a peon is, his or her job opportunities and preliminary principles.
Peon
The first and the most important thing are to understand what the word peon means. According to Vincent (20), the word peon was derived from Spanish word. The word had several meanings depending on the way it was used in Spain though primarily, was used to refer to a worker with limited control over his or her employment conditions. In the English-speaking world, the word is used to refer to a worker who has limited authority over his or her duties and performs unskilled tasks. Generally, the word is used to refer to a person who has little authority over his or her employment conditions (Vincent 21).
Peon job opportunities
After understanding who a peon is, Vincent (21), goes further to discuss his or her job titles. A peon can be a person working in an office as an attendant, office boy or performer of odd jobs. One can also be working as a policeman or a soldier among other jobs. Most tasks performed by peons are unskilled. This means that a peon can fit in a derogatory or self-effacing situation. These people usually have limited authority over their duties hence finding themselves in a situation where they have no choice but to perform them (Vincent 23).
Preliminary principles of a peon
According to Allyn (12), a peon needs to develop preliminary principles to cope with his or her working environment. He resolves that the most important preliminary principle of a peon is to develop communication skills that can make him or her more effective in an organizational environment. He went further and defined communication as an exchange of thoughts, feelings, or information. He discussed and concluded that communication skills consist majorly of listening, speaking and writing skills. Once a peon develops these skills, he or she becomes an effective communicator in the workforce.
Importance of peons preliminary principles
Communication skills were considered as the most important principle because it would help the peon to know how to respond to the management regardless of his or her job. This would enable him or her to communicate with the management respectably. These skills also would help the peon to differentiate between good and poor communication. As a result, it would help him or her to avoid consequences of poor communication like being fired. This principle would also help peons to understand their managers’ ways of communication and how to cope with them. Moreover, these skills would enable them to have freedom of expression. As a result, they would create some kind of bondage with their managers. This would further help them to have a positive perception of their managers. Finally, these skills prove to be the most important in enabling a peon to thrive in any organizational condition (Allyn 14).
Conclusion
Peons should understand that they have little authority over their working environment. They should learn preliminary principles to fit better in their workforce. As discussed above, peons need to develop effective communication skills that would enable them to thrive in any working condition.
