Attributes That Form the Nursing Professional Identity Based on Professional Standards

In the context of globalization, professional identity can be considered as the main determinant of the professional development of the individual and the main characteristic of the subject of labor. The work of a nurse is extremely complex and identity is formed by those attributes without which a nurse cannot be a good worker.

  1. One of these attributes is honesty, as patients prefer truthful information about their health status and chances for a decent life. Moreover, it implies immediate reporting of an error that has occurred.
  2. Compassion is one of the main skills of a nurse, which allows you to establish a strong and caring connection with patients and their families.
  3. Altruism is aimed at demonstrating to people that the nurse is ready to bear their responsibility for taking care of everyone who needs help.
  4. Responsibility means that each medical worker understands the duties assigned to him and performs them with accuracy and with the use of all his knowledge. Moreover, nurses can be in charge of junior staff, giving them tasks and asking for help in caring for patients.
  5. Dedication to work means caring for patients and making sure everyone gets the care they deserve. At the same time, nurses do not divide people on any grounds, including race, gender, or age. They perform all procedures and interventions without arrogance or hostility, with respect and compassion for patients.
  6. Competence is essential for providing quality services to all patients. Thanks to this, medical workers comply with legal and legislative rules. In addition, they follow the commandment to do no harm with the help of that knowledge and experience which constitutes their advantage as a worker.
  7. The ability to work in a team is one of the most important attributes inherent in every nurse. Thanks to this skill, they can work more effectively with partners and provide qualified assistance in emergency situations.
  8. Perseverance distinguishes a good nurse and helps to develop professional activities. Despite fatigue or lack of visible results, medical professionals must continue the necessary manipulations, which can save the patient’s life.
  9. Confidentiality complies with legal standards in healthcare and is mandatory for every single employee. Medical secrecy is one of the main principles that are followed in medical institutions. Additionally, it establishes trusting relationships with patients and their families.
  10. Respect implies that the nurse is always ready to support the choice of the patient or his representative, even if their opinions on this matter differ.

The Attributes Important for Nurse Leaders

The Nurse Leader has more responsibility and should therefore have the attributes to successfully lead a team. First of all, such a quality as leadership plays a dominant role. A nurse leader must establish relationships within the team, strengthen them and be an example for other employees. Moreover, it is important to be able to competently organize the actions of employees to provide optimal care to patients. Stress resistance is another necessary factor in team management. For the chief nurse, maintaining a sound mind in emergency situations is crucial. In addition, organization allows one not to miss important moments and provide patients with proper assistance. Due to this, the nurse can clearly manage the team, giving understandable tasks.

How Diversity and Teamwork Play a Role in Developing the Nursing Professional Identity

Diversity and teamwork play an important role in the development of professional identity. Teamwork with employees from different backgrounds, religions and attitudes teaches understanding and respect. (Davis et al., 2022). This helps to listen to other people’s opinions, even if they differ from the attitudes of other members of the group. In terms of diversity, a nurse can gain experience by caring for a variety of patients. Communication with different people improves the cultural and religious perception of a different nationality and race, which allows employees to quickly adapt to the variability in views.
