In dealing with most of the intoxicants today in the world, government tends to impose some of the vital rules which will help in prohibiting the use of those intoxicants. According to the history of British Columbia, the government has employed two liquors of prohibition which were quite harsh. The first one was imposed on its native population which was quite large and therefore the government wanted to find a way of discouraging the use of those intoxicants. (Hilton D., 2004). This rule was imposed in the period 1854-1921. The second liquor was to be imposed on the entire population which was meant to limit the whole Columbia population since these intoxicants affected them adversely this was done during the period 1917-1921.
They were faced with a sobering dilemma which was used to examine both the effect on dealing with the province’s Fondness for alcohol which had prevailed for quite a long time and their condition socially which was the main aspect that encouraged the use of alcohol and other drugs within the affected the whole population of British Columbia. This probation reached the minimum height in 1916 which was referred to as “purity election”. During this period other elections were held which were to decide on the twin referendums and the way women suffered due to alcohol. Therefore votes were being cast in order to determine whether the prohibition act will perfect the situation of British Columbia.
The rule or liquor prohibition which was meant for the Native population was to discourage them from the use of these drugs since the government believed that their population was acquiring these manners from the native population. The government wanted to take much of control of the native population first since they were drinking a lot of our frustration that they got from the rest of the population since they faced a lot of harassment and also their lands were being grabbed. Therefore due to the fact that these people drunk excessively the government saw that there is a need to control them since they will cause the rest of the population to also be too drawn to their sorrows in drinking. Their prohibition period lasted for quite a long time since they were addicted to drugs.
Both sides, that is the native side and the rest of the population did not give out a good conclusive report since the results of eh roles were manipulated by both sides, and therefore they could not come to conclusion. After this process of referendum, prohibition liquor was finally imposed in 1917. This issue of prohibition did not bear good results for the government of British Columbia but at last, it resulted to be hopeless corruption, favors, conflicts and it also resulted to build up of racism and a freelance informant who did not help in eradicating the use of alcohol in British Columbia.
British Columbia, therefore, wanted to ensure that all the use of drugs are finally eradicated since it was drugging its citizens into poverty and in other illegal activities which were brought about by the influence of alcohol (Hilton D., 2006). The government wanted to come up with all means which could be possible to ensure that the problem is finally eradicated which they believed originated from the native population and later spread to their country’s population. They believed that by first targeting the native population dealing with the rest of the population will be much easier since they will have dealt with the main source of the problem.
Prohibition on the use of alcohol was enhanced since there was a huge spread of consumption of alcohol in the country which was facilitated by the Native British Columbians and then spread to the other population. The government mainly targeted the native group first and then the rest of its population. This prohibition went on for quite a period of time and that of the other population finally ended in 1921. From that period various laws which are imposed on dealing with alcohol took a slow process to evolutionist to today’s illogical liquor law which is the law used today to deal with alcohol.
The evolution of this law affected various things including trade in the country such as fur, gold rush, fishing, forestry, and also mining industry (British Colombia Civil Liberty Association, 2004) other sectors affected during evolution are war, religion, urbanization, and also tourism.
The prohibition process was controlled by race since they first targeted those individuals who are native. Bearing in mind that the factors which affected the native population are also the same factors that affected the rest of the population, the government should target to control the use of alcohol in the whole population the same way so that they will avoid biases in undertaking their action. The prohibition time which was meant for the native population was quite long as compared to that of the rest of the population which took quite a little time. This does not mean that the rest of the population adopted the law that fast but it was definitely eliminated from them and left the other native population dealing with their prohibition period which actually did not work quite well since they felt discriminated against.
Criminals who were involved in drugs had different reactions towards the prohibition since they did not find it necessary to use alcohol so that they could forget all the troubles that they were facing. The native alcoholics did not have a choice in some instances since they were mistreated, their land grabbed, and other properties were taken away from them and therefore they found comfort in the use of alcohol. Therefore, prohibition did not do them any good since they would land in the hands of law if they were found committing this offense. Criminals argued that the Law should not be imposed since they were drinking at their own will. On the other hand, the government felt that the rate of insecurity was increasing as a result of consumption of alcohol and thus why they had to put prohibition period during what If anyone was to be found drinking as to face the law according. Those who drink alcohol felt a lot of insecurity in dealing with their problems since they could not do it appropriately for they feared the law and they faced a lot of distress in making efforts of dealing with the problem.
The government was quite strict on the native group since at the beginning the settlers in Canada began to cultivate grapes that they used or sold to the local companies to process wine. Therefore over quite a period of time, the wine industry developed which made a lot of sales and it leads to people engaging in a lot of consumption of alcohol within the Columbian community. When the government started its prohibition period production, sale, and distribution of these alcoholic products was entirely left in the hands of the province to deal with all the issues. Initially, wines were not prohibited as much as bear and spirit.
Since Canada is one of the countries which brings about various speakers who originate from vast areas around the world, they have actually caused the spread of drugs such as alcohol and spirits which the government wanted to control through the use of the prohibition act. The government wanted to deal with the problem once and for all since it found out that the rate of crimes is increasing daily.
Therefore in conclusion government found out that there was a great need to impose a law that will help in eliminating the use of alcohol and spirit within the country. This act did not actually work to meet their expectation since people still continued to use the drugs. By imposing prohibition laws at different times, the government did not actually succeed since they were not fair to the native population and therefore they consumed alcohol while hiding from the hands of the government. The history actually stated that the government imposed two separate liquors which were meant to control the use of alcohol in the entire Columbian population. The limitation they faced in imposing the rule was actually ignorance by those who consumed the alcohol and also their failure to advocate the law effectively to the entire population since they imposed their law in patches which is not an effective way of dealing with prohibition in the same country. Fewer resources were also employed by the government in ensuring that the law is affected and thus why to some extent it was not that effective.
