Carolyn’s goals in Walden University are solid and can stand on their own. Any nurse should strive to provide healthcare to individuals from underprivileged, neglected, and abused backgrounds, as they need it first and foremost. There is a great deal of inequality in modern healthcare in the US and in the world in general. Over 14 million Americans do not have a proper health insurance, and many more do not have mental illnesses fully covered. Mental health hospitals and specialists are few and far between, while their reimbursement practices often do not pay for the time and effort spent with patients.
To change the situation for the better, new nurses must be trained with dedication towards creating a lasting social change. If a university or a learning facility focuses on profits and successful careers over the overarching mission of healing, then it supports the status quo. Walden University’s mission is different – it seeks to promote social causes through education, affirmation, and diversity (Walden University, 2022). It offers the necessary competencies not just to be an effective nurse, but to be an advocate for change. A nurse can and should engage policymakers, communities, and other stakeholders in order to promote quality mental health services for those who often get denied care.
Therefore, it is very important for student goals and university mission to match. If they align, then the learning process goes smoothly, and the student is making progress towards what they find to be important in life. Otherwise, some of the effort is wasted, and has to be made up for. Carolyn made a good choice by enrolling into Walden University, since it appears that their goals coincide.
