Introduction
The United States has had several issues regarding military spending over the last years. The expenses are too high for a country not formally involved in armed conflict or war. Moreover, it is impossible to detect the spending of the money since the White House and Pentagon do not reveal this information. Undoubtedly the system requires reconstructions and specific changes that would allow to distribute of the budget more reasonably and focus on the currently urgent problems. Thus, this paper aims to propose a solution to the problem and suggest alternatives to the current situation.
Problem and Solution
There is a significant difference between military spending during critical times such as Vietnam War or Cold War and nowadays when there is no real reason for such a huge budget. The government could easily cut the expenses by at least $100 billion and invest the money in other spheres that could provide security for the citizens of the US. For instance, instead of buying nuclear weapons, the White House could contribute to the development of diplomacy, which is a more peaceful and democratic method.
In addition, other problems in the country affect numerous people and require decisive actions and financial investments, such as coronavirus and climate change. The global pandemic caused an extremely high number of deaths and serious health problems among the population. In turn, global warming induces natural disasters so that certain regions suffer from floods, earthquakes, and forest fires. Thereby, the focus should be shifted from military spending to the other aspects that may be as important as the Pentagon’s services.
Conclusion
Overall, the military budget is irrelevantly high, and the situation is even worse since the public cannot even see the actual audit of all the expenses. The government should change their approach to national safety and realize that other sources of danger require attention and significant financial investment. Therefore, the costs should be reduced by a minimum of $100 billion and instead spent on the fight against coronavirus and global warming. Since the USA is not engaged in any war, it would be more efficient to focus on the current urgent issues rather than financing the sphere which already provides enough security for the country.
