The following is a capability testing analysis for Publix Supermarkets to manage product cycle times within a range of 1.5 days minimum and 5.5 days maximum. The range for each sample day has been established from random cycles in the data, leading to the determination of the standard deviation (σ) and the limits within which each sample can be tested to estimate average capabilities. The equation used to determine the CPK was listed as follows:

Executive Summary

The process evaluation for Publix Supermarkets Inc. was based on a case study of the company’s operational activities and the desired progress toward becoming a top retail brand. The expectation was that Publix Supermarket could make incremental progress from the first day of lean process implementation, reducing cycle times for inventory movement activities, especially door-to-door delivery for e-commerce orders. The following Table 1 was created based on three samples of the cycle reduction time.

The assumption was that Publix Supermarket took more than 6 days to process orders within the United States before implementing lean software for delivery processing. The other assumption was that Publix Supermarkets would desire a 1.5-day delivery time as the least average for local orders, whereas a 5.5-day average would be appropriate for orders across states. Having established the upper and lower limits (UCL), a control chart was developed, as shown in Figure 1 above, to determine how the days fit within the established range. The following is a summary of the data used to determine CPK above.

Benefiting From Lean Tools

Based on the CPK values, Publix Supermarkets Inc. is capable of achieving a record 1.8 days for most of its delivery processes. The standard deviation of the average (mean) delivery cycle times was 1.53, corresponding to the lean sigma (σ). CPK calculations averaged to 1.8, which is closer to the company’s 1.5 lower limit than to the 5.5 upper limit. Using the CPK as a measure of the potential capability of lean processes to meet Publix Supermarkets Inc.’s needs, it is justifiable for the retail giant to implement automated systems to reduce waste and shorten delivery times.

SPC Project

The SPC project was used to evaluate how inventory cycle times would change over time as the company implemented lean processes to reduce waste and accelerate product delivery to customers through an omnichannel/online retail program. The control process was used to estimate the scale of impacts to Publix Supermarkets if they trim operational waste, yielding an average savings of 2.3 days, with a maximum of 5.5 days (Dutta et al., 2021). Therefore, the company should invest in advanced analytics tools and blockchain technologies for data handling. Publix Supermarkets Inc. should collaborate with suppliers to promote data sharing and visibility into the demand-planning process, ensuring just-in-time delivery and consumer-driven inventory volume management.
