Introduction
Over the past several decades, the presence of social media has grown rapidly and is now a part of every individual’s life, whether they want it or not. Facebook is one of the platforms widely used by audiences of all ages around the world. Nevertheless, despite the platform’s popularity, it is heavily criticized for its policies and governance. While the regulation of Facebook will enhance privacy protection and reduce the spread of fake news and political influence, one should understand that it will be costly and may involve a significant compliance burden.
Facebook Regulation and Privacy Protection
Overseeing large companies by governmental agencies is crucial to protect the public’s and smaller businesses’ interests. In the case of Facebook, regulations can come with both advantages and pitfalls. On the one hand, Facebook’s regulation can aid in the process of privacy protection.
As mentioned in the case study, Facebook’s system can be vulnerable to external access to customers’ private data (Lawrence, 2020). Additionally, the platform has been accused of spreading misleading information, being called “the worst perpetrator when it comes to spreading fake news” (Travers, 2020, para. 1). Besides, from personal experience, there is an excessive use of the platform during elections to influence the public. If better regulation is employed, the company will not only have to improve its transparency policies, disclosure of sponsored content, and fact-checking measures, but also implement stricter measures for breaches of personal information.
On the other hand, many costs can be associated with implementing heavier regulation. For example, enhanced regulation can hinder development and innovation, placing burdens on the company. Additionally, it can be costly for the authorities to ensure that Facebook complies with regulations. However, given the corporation’s issues, better regulation is still necessary.
Conclusion
In summary, while Facebook regulation would enhance privacy protection and safeguards against false information and political influence, one should be aware that it is expensive and may entail a significant compliance burden. Still, Facebook regulation can aid in the process of protecting privacy. If tighter regulations are used, the corporation would also need to have stricter policies for data breaches and strengthen its transparency policies, disclosure of sponsored content, and fact-checking procedures. On the other hand, establishing stricter regulations may come at a high cost. Nevertheless, there still has to be better regulation because of the corporation’s problems.
