At Harmon’s Repair Station, modern technology includes a Microsoft Excel database that is continuously updated with all relevant data, including repair components and clientele information, based on user input.
Harmon’s Repair Station is seeing a surge in demand for repairs as many airlines are outsourcing the majority of their Igloo cargo storage unit maintenance to China. These high-priority systems require immediate attention. This case is an excellent illustration of the importance of investing in information and implementation procedures in different settings.
Problem for Don
Barry, one of Don’s workers, who operates Harman’s Repair Station Inc., just completed an RFID training session. Don’s business maintains igloos for the military and airlines. In this case, Barry has done his best to convince Don that RFID tags are not the most excellent option for his firm, but he is not persuaded.
Moreover, Don’s concerns are shared by other well-known supply chain and logistics professionals (Garrett, 2021). His first issue stems from a lack of understanding of RFID technology. Barry’s conversation with him and an article from a magazine had been his sole sources of knowledge thus far. Don requires thorough instruction on how to use it in the repair station before he can decide on this technology.
After reading Don’s responses to Barry, it is clear that he is completely opposed to contemporary technology. Since he doesn’t have any technology-based work-monitoring tools yet, he relies on his staff to keep several Excel spreadsheets tracking inventory and work orders up to date. Still, Don opposes introducing this new technology and shows little interest in it.
However, Don’s business success depends on his ability to appreciate the value of investing in cutting-edge technology. He does not yet have all the necessary data to comprehend how RFID technology will benefit his company. A sophisticated identification and control system is unnecessary for the low output of Don’s repair shop (Dastreset al., 2022). Don may be persuaded to see the value in this new technology if the company could secure contracts with airlines and the Air Force to repair additional igloos rather than sending them to China for repair.
False Assumptions
Barry is sure that RFID technology will play a significant role in Harman Repair Station’s future success after finishing an RFID training session. Moreover, he asserts that significant financing for RFID research has already come from the aviation sector (Su et al., 2021). Barry is determined to persuade Don that RFID technology is worth investing in.
After reviewing Barry’s proposal, Don saw that several of his presumptions were incorrect. Barry suggested that RFID technology could quadruple business revenue. He mistakenly believes that the corporation can use this technology to double in size; in fact, this is quite difficult and requires significant time and effort (Bianco et al., 2021). The assumptions and the tense in which he states it are incorrect; furthermore, he cannot provide any evidence to support it.
How Barry Could Have Sold the Idea Better
In several ways, Barry might have convinced Don more successfully. If Barry had established a training program, Don might have benefited his firm by learning more about RFID technology. The training program may include both informational and implementation methods, providing Don with all the information he needs to determine whether this technology is appropriate for his repair business. Furthermore, Barry ought to have incorporated statistical data in a business case that accounted for the possible benefits and profit margins that RFID technology may provide the company. This tool would have been a great asset, as many business owners prefer to have the data in their hands when making decisions (Gomes et al., 2023).
Moreover, it would be helpful if Barry could elaborate on how simple RFID technology is. Don is skeptical about the technology’s potential financial impact on the business. Barry would have provided a thorough strategy that would have saved money, rather than assuming how to install the equipment. If Don had gone in this direction, he would have been more open to integrating the technology into his company.
Advice to Don
I would advise Don to conduct more independent research. By learning more about RFID systems and how they may give him an advantage in the repair sector, Don could increase his chances of landing a job in the future. Moreover, I would tell him that, although I understand his worries, new developments are always happening, and RFID will remain at the forefront of technology. If his clients, the Air Force and airlines, invested in this technology, he would stand to gain an advantage over his competitors. By going to such an extent, Don would show his clients that he is committed to keeping their business and keeping his firm relevant.
Conclusion
It is evident from the case that learning about RFID systems and how they can benefit the repair industry could boost Don’s company’s prospects. Using RFID technology in the repair sector enhances a company’s competitive edge and long-term market performance. It also places the business at the forefront of technical breakthroughs. Even though Don was not convinced, it is crucial to underscore the need for training in these settings. Even though Barry could have used different arguments, it is still a clear example of the importance of technology in organizational settings.
