The research topic helps in appraising the common strategies that help to improve small-scale enterprises. The study will also provide helpful analysis to future investors on awareness of the strategies likely to be encountered. The topic will provide research questions based on the strategies and the Government’s role in improving small-scale enterprises. Some of the Government’s responsibilities include providing basic infrastructural facilities and providing adequate financing for small businesses (Israel and Hitzeroth, 2018, p. 203). The discussion of the topics will also provide more insights through a systematic methodology for data collection.
Introduction
The introduction will entail brief information on the concept of small business enterprises that plays a central role in economic development. It will show how small enterprises provide a viable employment creation, develop the culture, and poverty alleviation through low investment and indigenous technology (Ortiz-Avram et al., 2018, p. 254). It will also discuss how small business enterprises’ failures undermine the nation’s economic growth and development. The impact will contribute to the need to explore the strategies laid by business leaders on business enterprise sustainability and their contribution to the increase in value of a country’s economic development (Turner and Endres, 2017, p. 3). The research will also analyze the role of leaders in the failure or success of small business enterprises. It will also explore the strategies that small business manufacturing leaders use in sustaining the formation of business enterprise.
Problem statement
Despite various efforts from the state and federal governments that seek to help improve and develop small-scale businesses, it remains a doubt whether the enterprises are still not facing challenges. It explains the reasons for their closing down and closure. The common problems for business enterprises include inadequate planning, undercapitalization, lack of trained and skilled workforce, poor competitive position, incompetence of management, and inadequate infrastructural facilities (Ahmad et al., 2018, p. 7). The problems have a reduced contribution to national stability and economic growth. Therefore, the general business problem is inefficiencies in strategic business decisions, leading to loss of investments. The research will revolve around the specific business problem summarized as the lack of strategies that boost small-scale business enterprises’ sustainability (Buli, 2017).
Main research Objective
The study will involve an attempt to achieve the main objective, further sub-divided into specific objectives.
The main objective of the study will be to examine the strategies employed to improve small business enterprises.
Research Sub-objectives
The specific objectives of the study will be to:
- To assess the problems of the small-scale business and possible solutions
- To determine the Government’s role, such as the state and the Federal Government, in improving the environment for small-scale business enterprises.
- To determine the financial requirements that aid effective management of the enterprises.
- To assess the relationship between workers/employees in a firm or organization and its effect on enterprise performance.
Main Research Question
The main research question in this research will be, what strategies will be used by these small business enterprise leaders and enhance business sustainability.
Research Sub-questions
- What analysis strategies will you conduct before starting the business?
- What will be the objective strategic keys that will be used to start the business?
- What strategies will be put in place to deal with the challenges while running the business?
- What strategies will you put in place to enable you to grow your business enterprises?
- What stretches will be used for the continuation of business enterprises beyond five years after formation?
- What will be your key strategies to change the environment of business?
- How will the business evolve from formation to date?
- What are other experiences would you wish to share with other leaders that will benefit the business, not covered in the interview.
Significance of the Research
The study will be highly significant, considering that the results will contribute to small enterprise practices’ existing knowledge of small enterprise practices. The recommendations will also lead to social changes through its applications in business practices. The study will identify the strategies involved by business manufacturing leaders that help sustain the business enterprises. The findings will also represent the research contribution to strategies that seek to improve the enterprises’ success rate considering that they play an essential role in improving quality of life and poverty alleviation (Bouwman et al., 2019, p. 101828). Therefore, implementing successful strategies will help the businesses thrive and lead to positive social changes through the improved economy and employment opportunities.
The research will involve a discussion to show its contribution to the business practices. It will, therefore, involve a clear understanding of how the leaders in small enterprises sustain their business enterprises. The exploration of the strategies will show how small business enterprises use their operations’ sustainability (Heikkilä et al., 2018). Therefore, the recommendations based on the research findings will enhance the businesses’ preparedness in tackling the challenges they are likely to face. The study will seek to provide insights to leaders of the business ways of responding and adapting to different market changes. Adopting the study’s knowledge will help appropriate preparation and sustainability, leading to a reduction in the enterprises’ rate of failure.
The research study also seeks to imply social change. The findings will be applied by small business enterprises leading to a significant financial performance. Social changes include providing goods and services, improved living standards, and sustainability in employment opportunities. The study also aims at having significant importance to social changes like reduced crime rates, improved welfare, and reduced tension between people who have and those without.
Literature Review
The research will review the procedures realized to have been used by small business enterprises to maintain their business for up to 5 years since installation. The research will commence with a literature review starting from the general systems theory and description of what a small business is and the owner, followed by descriptions of business success, small business factors, and business environmental factors (Chang and Cheng, 2019, p. 458). It will also reveal the advantages that the economy has on having small businesses’ contribution to its development.
General systems theory is one of the most common theories used in digitalized business management research, including the sudden environments from which leaders work. This idea of systems theory was brought up by von Bertalanffy and started to gradually act as great ideas for complicated situations. Von understood that a system is a group of elements connected it the environment (Chang and Cheng, 2019, p. 458). Apart from this, Almaney came up with his definition and defined a system as connected elements creating one unit. Flood and Carson defined a system as a congregation of elements connected with an arranged entity that can cause change. When used in a study of an enterprise, the general systems theory can increase this study’s perception.
Small business manufacturing leaders work under a specific protocol that the organization is involved in and reacts with the environment. Von Bertalanffy introduced the idea of a system working with its environment. Flood and Carson later came up with a different idea of the open system and defined it as a system that relies on its environment for resources (Israel and Hitzeroth, 2018, p. 203). They also stated that the connectivity among elements is the movement of material, power, and information.
Therefore, a business enterprise is an open system because it depends on its environment for information, works on them, and later distributes to the environment. The research will also reveal the procedures followed by small business leaders on placing the enterprise and its relationship with its environment. Flood and Carson defined system thinking as a combination of opinions that gradually work on complicated things (Israel and Hitzeroth, 2018, p. 203).
System thinking can give solutions to the significant challenges of an enterprise. Business systems are hard to predict because of the distinguished effect of individual elements of the business system and business environment on the business systems. When many subsystems are put together, they form a business system, each subsystem working uniformly to create relationships towards an enterprise’s success. General system theory covers the whole enterprise, including the people and technology who work together towards enterprise success (Goerres et al., 2019, p. 75). Walstrom gave his view on the importance of using systems theory when learning business enterprise to understand leadership roles better.
The systems theory can give guidelines for studying a business activity. System theory can be used to study systems in extra fields like business management and as a section of the social sciences. Wilson applied the knowledge of general systems theory to learn about resource planning systems. Thomas used the knowledge of general systems theory when learning about techniques of becoming information technology professionals. On the other hand, Grandy applied his general systems theory knowledge to know more about attaining yearly profit in small businesses.
When starting a small business can include the creation of different procedures and tools. In general systems theory, evolution is the main component, and it supports the creation of other features. Through interactions with the environment, a business can get new characteristics. The effort put across by leaders on how they deal with challenges and their solutions determines the success and failures of a small business (Turner and Endres, 2017, p. 3). General systems theory will provide the primary tool that helped in researching the procedures that small business manufacturing enterprise leaders used to maintain their business.
Research Methodology
The research methodology will be the final section of the research plan that includes the overall research methodology. It will outline the strategy employed in the research, research philosophy, the research method, methods of data collection, sample selection, types of data analysis, and ethical consideration when conducting the study (Dźwigoł and Dźwigoł-Barosz, 2018, p. 424).
Research Philosophy
The research will be led by a curiosity about research domains on entrepreneurship and, to be specific, the strategies to improve small-scale enterprises. The research will be driven by the passion and enormous excitement involved in conducting research and obtaining questions to the problem statement. Seeking answers for the research questions is necessary for advancing knowledge regarding entrepreneurship, which is the critical driver for the research passion. The use of different research methods will allow an opportunity to advance in human resource management (Hürlimann, 2019, p. 111). Therefore, the research will be based on beliefs such as the need to have an analytic and a systematic mind considering that research involves strategic thinking and comprehensive knowledge. The research will also be conducted with an open mind and critical thinking mindset to address criticism and challenges. The pursuit for researching with high-quality standards emphasizes the need for courage and humility, and life-long learning.
Research Design
The research design will provide a framework for research methods and techniques that the researcher adopts. The research will be held concerning past research and dissertations. Several academic research types exist on the strategies for improving small business enterprises (Tobi and Kampen, 2018, p. 1209). Therefore, the study will be new research based on an existing research topic. A quantitative research design will help provide statistical conclusions for collecting actionable insights. The collection of numbers will provide an essential perspective for making critical research conclusions. The design’s adoption will also seek to get insights into the research topic (Nyumba et al., 2018, p. 32). On the other hand, qualitative research design will help determine the relationship between the collected data and observations based on mathematical calculations.
Time Horizon
The study will employ longitudinal and cross-sectional options (Velte and Stawinoga, 2017, p. 275). The critical consideration is the time taken for performing research based on independent phenomena from the chosen research method. The cross-sectional studies will help in obtaining information based on the variables in a different context. It will involve selecting different organizations and people and performing the study following certain factors. The option will also take care of time and resource constraints (Kline, 2017, p. 71). The option of longitudinal studies will also help study the group of subjects to research the problem dynamics.
Data Collection Techniques and Procedures
The research will involve using an interview data collection method that provides in-depth interviews aimed at gathering opinions regarding the study topic (Sloman et al., 2019, p. 556). The other technique employed in conducting the research is the questionnaire method to allow for the collection of details from a wide range of respondents (Snyder, 2019, p. 333). The semi-structured questionnaire will serve as a guide for the interview. Therefore, relevant questions will be prepared to help in satisfaction with the research objectives. The respondents will be allowed enough time to express their views regarding the topic under research.
Data Analysis Techniques and Procedures
The study will involve the use of content analysis to analyze the collected data from the personal interviews. The use of content analysis will simplify and reduce the collected data and ensure that the results produced are measured quantitative techniques (Abutabenjeh and Jaradat, R., 2018, p. 237). The analysis will also allow researchers to restructure the qualitative data collected for the reason of accomplishing research objectives.
Validity and Reliability
The quality of the research will depend on the validity and reliability of the methodology. Therefore, the research will aim at increasing the trustworthiness of the findings of the qualitative research. For instance, the use of the procedures outlined in the interview protocol will aid the data gathering process’s reliability (Vakili and Jahangiri, 2018, p. 106). On the other hand, validity entails credibility, such as matching the source with the interpretation of the research.
Ethical Considerations
The research will have conducted and subjected to various ethical issues. It will ensure that the study participants report their written acceptance regarding consent for participation in the research (Eaton, 2020, p. 848). The consent will aim to reassure the participants that taking part in the research is voluntary and, thus, free to withdraw if need be.
Limitations of the Research
The research is likely to face limitations such as a small sample size that make the research unreliable and that qualitative research may not allow proper measurement of the examined problems (Roberts, 2018). The study may also face the challenge of participants that are unwilling to speak against their business organization.
