The referenced videos describe the correlation between social changes throughout human history and the development of the most influential institutes: family, education, and religion. The institute of the family has undergone a drastic change, as love as a factor for choosing a spouse has been introduced relatively recently. Even though science establishes a great range of family connections, every individual has a different perception of kinship. Learning itself is not the only purpose of the educational process. It also teaches people the basic rules of society and social interactions. The main changes in the place of religion and churches in communities happened due to the availability of information to the masses.
Those are three interesting facts from the video:
- In many cultures, the concept of non-real (fictive) kinship exists, which describes the phenomenon of people without any family ties assuming each other family members.
- Marriage might enhance inequality in society because people tend to choose spouses of the same class, race, and educational level.
- Religious cults are usually very short-lived because of the dependence of their followers on the leader and not the general ideas.
The most interesting fact from the video is the natural occurrence of polygamous families in certain regions or communities due to demographic specifics.
The tradition of moving after marriage to the parents of one of the spouses has changed a lot due to stages of economic transformation in society, and I can see a variety of living arrangements among my neighbors and friends. The videos reinforced my beliefs in marriage as a social partnership and the normalcy of divorce in modern family life. As a result of seeing the videos, I will pay more attention to the topic of elders’ neglect and abuse.
