Social work is a profession focused on helping people and promoting social justice, which may not seem inherently connected to Christianity. Nonetheless, many social workers have discovered methods to incorporate their faith into their practice, relying on Christian teachings and biblical principles to guide their work (Garland, 2015).
Diana S. Richmond Garland explores the link between religion and social work in her book “Why I Am a Social Worker.” She points out that social work is frequently founded on values related to Christian principles, like compassion, justice, and service to others (Garland, 2015). Many social workers discover that their faith helps them connect with people on a deeper level and provides them with a feeling of purpose and drive in their profession.
Another way that social workers integrate their faith into their work is by following the example of Jesus. Jesus was renowned for his empathy and readiness to provide assistance to those who were disadvantaged or in need. In their employment, social workers can make an effort to uphold these ideals and assist those who are frequently marginalized or persecuted by society. James 2:14–17 emphasizes that faith without actions is meaningless and motivates Christians to take active measures to assist people. Jesus instructs his followers to treat those who are thirsty, hungry, ill, or imprisoned with the same compassion they would have for themselves (Matthew 25:35–40). This verse emphasizes the significance of treating every person with respect and decency, regardless of their situation.
In terms of Chamiec-Case’s models of integration of faith and the social work profession, I believe that the model of sustaining/coping best describes me. This approach stresses the significance of having a close relationship with God and the use of faith as a source of resilience and comfort during difficult times (Garland, 2015). In my experience as a social worker, my faith has served as a tremendous source of strength and hope, enabling me to carry on with my profession, even though it can be highly challenging.
