Introduction
A thoroughly crafted philosophy is a crucial part of any special education program. It guides instruction, allows educators to make decisions on ethical questions and controversies, and gives educators a clear vision of what they are supposed to teach kids. Nonetheless, it’s critical to consider my views on special education, including its goals, the teacher’s role, strategies for student learning, and the subjects that must be covered in the classroom.
Purpose of Special Education
Firstly, it is necessary to reflect on the purpose of school and special education services. Although teaching children basic life skills and competencies is the main objective of education, education for kids with special needs goes above and beyond that. It should also be focused on building confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging in a world that often fails to accommodate their diverse needs. Essentially, it should prepare them both intellectually and psychologically for the challenges ahead and inspire them to pursue their dreams despite perceived limitations.
Role of Teachers
Secondly, the role of teaching in learning also needs to be discussed. I believe that students must be taught with holistic ideals in mind. This means that instruction should not only focus on knowledge transfer but also be tailored to foster understanding, empathy, and adaptability. In the field of special education, creating a space where each student feels valued, heard, and seen is crucial. Therefore, I include holistic ideals into my special education philosophy.
Optimal Approach to Student Learning
Thirdly, it is crucial to review what I see as the best way to achieve student learning. Above all, I think that skill-based direct instruction—which is the most effective method in teaching kids with disabilities—should be provided in a predictable, consistent, and reliable manner (Kauffman & Hornby, 2020). Using evidence-based special education techniques will help guarantee that all disabled youth receive instruction that maximizes their learning outcomes. Thus, to ensure students learn, I rely on evidence-based strategies that have been shown by science to be effective for kids with exceptional needs.
