Voice recognition is the use of software and additional apparatus to capture voice-based commands from a user and transfer these to a computer. In recent years there had been an increase in the development of software and approaches to software design. Among the examples of such advances are witnessed in voice recognition software that is used to convert text to speech (Neustein, 2010). His type of software is widely used in call centers and other such facilities where automated responses may suffice.
Another use of this concept that has been widely explored through software is the use of a voice message for authentication. Speaker authentication or identification requires that the speaker record their voice while saying a keyword used for identification (Neustein, 2010). The computer system will analyze the voice pattern to confirm that the speaker is the same individual. This approach is very effective as a security measure and can be widely used to control access. An example of this software is the program Dictation 2004 4.4.1 which can be purchased at approx $49 from various sources online (freedownloadscenter). Since the software will most likely require the purchase of a microphone it is suggested that a microphone that is compatible with the plugs on conventional sound cards is selected.
