The Maxi Trial aimed to dismantle the group’s operations and bring criminals like Salvatore Riina to justice, together with other members of the Casa Nostra. The judges who were presiding over the case were not only confronted with the Sicilian Mafia but also received numerous threats from the American Mafia, which incorporated the likes of the Genovese and the Gambino families. The interconnection between these Mafia groups created a global network of transatlantic collaboration in criminal activity.

The conspiracy that takes place between the activities of the politicians and the establishment of the rule of law continues to perpetuate the existence of the erosion and thriving of gangs. For the most part, politicians jeopardized the basis of the justice system. These conditions created an environment in which the Mafia could thrive due to cases of blackmail, with citizens being murdered as collateral damage. The collusion occurring in this prospect breeds the generation of organized crime that the politicians take part in, and consequently cover their tracks by being part of the Mafia’s operations.
