Introduction

In the business realm, critical thinking serves as a cornerstone for evaluating industries regarding profitability, competitive positioning, and overall appeal. In this context, it is imperative to scrutinize the strengths and practicality of industry analytical frameworks for effectively assessing an industry’s dynamics. Frameworks such as Porter’s Five Forces Model, SWOT Analysis, and PESTEL Analysis stand out as indispensable tools in this endeavor, helping unravel the competitive landscape, identify opportunities, and pinpoint potential threats within an industry.

SWOT Analysis

The SWOT analysis matrix is a convenient tool for structuring the strategic characteristics of the environment and the organization. It allows one to identify and structure the firm’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as potential opportunities and threats (Lonsdale & Kane, 2019). It is achieved by comparing internal strengths and weaknesses with the market opportunities. The versatility of the SWOT analysis method allows it to be used as a research tool in situations and as an initial structuring factor in documentation.

The SWOT analysis method has both advantages and disadvantages. First, it is necessary to emphasize the method’s strengths. The foremost is that the method is applicable across the most diverse areas of economics and management and can be adapted to the object of study at any level. Moreover, it is practical because it allows an independent selection of analyzed elements based on the objectives. It can be used both for operational control of the organization’s activity and for strategic planning and decision-making (Grant, 2021). At the same time, the analysis of publications on this issue shows some problematic aspects of this method.

The results of a SWOT analysis application largely depend on the qualifications and analytical abilities of the specialists who make it. Moreover, the method has several limitations, the main of which is the impracticality of working within a strict framework that assumes the influence of all external and internal factors is continuous. In contrast, it is more often discrete (Mazzucato et al., 2020).

When conducting a systems analysis, the whole process, rather than its elements, should be evaluated; otherwise, errors may occur. The absence of any quantitative or evaluative indicators makes the method simple but, at the same time, insufficiently informative for solving specific problems. Thus, SWOT analysis only labels, without allowing for comparison and evaluation.

Porter’s Five Forces Model

Porter’s Five Forces Model is one of the main analytical tools to assess the extent to which a business is threatened by competition. Competition is present in large companies as well as among start-ups. Therefore, it is important to understand who offers similar products or services in the market, how they operate, and how to avoid losing the battle for customers’ attention. The main purpose of the model is to give businesses an analytical tool for adapting to highly competitive conditions (Lonsdale & Kane, 2019). Each force in Michael Porter’s model represents a different level of product competitiveness:

  1. market power of buyers;
  2. market power of suppliers;
  3. the threat of new entrants;
  4. the danger of substitute goods;
  5. level of competition or intra-industry competition.

Competitive analysis of the industry helps determine the intensity and severity of competitive forces, identifying a position in which the company is maximally protected from their influence and can influence them on its own terms. The golden rule of Michael Porter’s theory of five competitive forces is the following: the weaker the influence of competitive forces, the greater the opportunities for high profits in the industry (Mazzucato et al., 2020). The major advantage of the theory is the capacity to assess a business several years ahead.

The methodology allows one to determine how effective the chosen strategy will be in the future and whether there is a risk of the company’s complete collapse in this or that industry (Grant, 2021). It is practical and relevant to apply the theory when introducing new technologies and products. Among the disadvantages, only a lack of instant results stands out. The assessment is carried out with a future perspective, making it not practical for building short-term plans.

PESTEL Analysis

PESTEL Analysis is a strategic management tool used to review and assess external macro-environmental factors that can influence an organization. It provides a thorough framework for evaluating various external aspects, including Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental, and Legal facets (Mazzucato et al., 2020). By considering numerous dimensions, PESTEL provides a detailed understanding of external conditions and enables associations to take a holistic view, recognizing opportunities and threats that might not be immediately apparent.

One of its strengths lies in the structured system it offers, making it easier for communities to systematically assess each element and its potential impact (Grant, 2021). This structured method facilitates more rational decision-making by developing strategic insights and permitting organizations to anticipate transformations. Moreover, the framework’s flexibility allows customization to distinct needs and purposes, making it adaptable across industries, sectors, and organizational contexts.

However, PESTEL Analysis correspondingly has its drawbacks. It can sometimes yield an overwhelming amount of data, making it challenging to prioritize factors or discern their relative importance. The complexity of the external environment and the interplay among diverse elements can make it difficult to accurately assess their impact, leading to oversimplification or the neglect of critical factors (Mazzucato et al., 2020).

While PESTEL helps understand the current external environment, it may have limited predictive power for future developments, as external factors are dynamic and subject to rapid change. Moreover, there is a risk of bias when interpreting external factors, as perceptions may vary across individuals or be influenced by organizational biases, potentially leading to inaccurate assessments and flawed decision-making.

Thorough Industries Review

Despite their strengths, none of the aforementioned frameworks provides a comprehensive portrayal of an industry. Each model provides a specific lens through which to explore certain aspects, but none encapsulates the full intricacies of an industry (Grant, 2021). To conduct a comprehensive analysis, a multifaceted strategy is required that incorporates insights from various frameworks, as well as additional methodologies and data sources.

Integrating findings from Porter’s Five Forces Model, SWOT Analysis, and PESTEL Analysis can show a more holistic understanding. Nevertheless, it is crucial to include market research, industry reports, financial analyses, and qualitative assessments (Lonsdale & Kane, 2019). By synthesizing insights from diverse perspectives and employing a multidimensional analytical approach, one can gain a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of an industry’s landscape, thereby facilitating informed decision-making and strategic planning.

Conclusion

In conclusion, analyzing industries in the business world requires critical thinking and the use of frameworks such as SWOT, Porter’s Five Forces, and PESTEL. While each framework has strengths, none provides a comprehensive view of an industry on its own. Porter’s model determines competitive dynamics, SWOT analysis stresses internal strengths and weaknesses, and PESTEL analysis considers external factors.

However, they all have constraints, such as overlooking dynamic changes or being overly broad. A comprehensive analysis combines insights from these frameworks with other data sources, such as market research and financial analysis. This multidimensional method enables informed decision-making to navigate the complexities of the industry landscape, driving sustainable competitive advantage and organizational success.
