Purpose

The main goal of writing this research paper is to identify and discuss the reasons why college athletes should be compensated and given the status of employees. It should be noted that this issue can be of great concern to many students who do not receive appropriate rewards for their important contributions to the economic sustainability of many educational institutions (Wertheimer, 1999, p. 94). Thus, the main rationale is to highlight the importance of this particular issue and show why changes are necessary.

These changes can bring improvements into the lives of many people. I would like to learn more about the role played by student athletes because this knowledge can be important for demonstrating why their status should be reconsidered by policy-makers, legislators, and college officials. These findings should be taken into account by the administrators of many colleges and universities that benefit from the activities of student athletes. Moreover, this research should be considered by college athletes who should feel more empowered. In this case, I will act mostly as an advocate who will try to show that the interests of some stakeholders have been consistently overlooked. These are the main details that be distinguished.

Statement of qualifications

As an athlete, I can be one of the stakeholders who are significantly affected by this issue. Thus, I need to admit that I will try to present a particular view on the role of athletes. This is one of the points that can be made. Additionally, I am familiar with the experiences of many athletes who are not fully rewarded for the contributions that they make (Wertheimer, 1999, p. 94). Moreover, I have background knowledge about the importance of students’ athletics for the economic sustainability of colleges and universities. Overall, my personal experience and background knowledge can make me more aware about the challenges encountered by student athletes whose needs can often be disregarded. Nevertheless, I also understand that these qualities can make biased. This is one of the pitfalls that should be avoided.

Therefore, I need to remain impartial while discussing the evidence that can either support or refute my arguments. I should not dismiss the opposing opinions. These are some of the main precautions that should be taken because they are important for the validity of my arguments and findings.

Tentative argument

There was no specific event that prompted me to discuss this topic. However, I have heard of numerous news reports about athletes demanding more adequate compensation for their efforts. Overall, my interpretation of this topic is primarily related to the concept of justice. At present, student athletes are deprived of the economic privileges to which they are fully entitled (Rhode, 2010). In turn, it is important to change the status quo. The main problem is that this topic does not receive much attention of legislators. In my opinion, much attention should be paid to the legal barriers that prevent people from receiving the benefits that are given to other stakeholders. This is one of the details that should not be overlooked. Admittedly, at this stage, it is too early to make generalizations. Nevertheless, in my opinion, college athletes should be provided compensation for their work; moreover, they need to be viewed as employees of colleges. This is the main thesis that I would like to discuss in greater detail.
