Abu Dhabi University is a community where relations and activities are based on the mutual respect, dignity, principles of academic integrity, and awareness.
Students of Abu Dhabi University are expected to pursuit for academic goals, be oriented to academic excellence, be responsible for individual behaviour and actions, and honour the University’s property.
The members of the University’s community must follow the specific student policy developed to state the norms of students’ behaviors, their rights and responsibilities.
Thus, the student policy used in Abu Dhabi University as the code of conduct is based on three key aspects which are the University’s expectations in relation to students as the members of the University’s community, students’ rights, and students’ responsibilities.
The requirements, norms, and principles mentioned in the policy are worked out to regulate students’ discipline and prevent the violation of the basic University’s rules, contributing to building the secure learning environments.
Students of Abu Dhabi University are expected to follow the core mission of the University and focus on all the norms and rules developed to build the friendly community which is oriented to cooperation and learning achievements.
Students of Abu Dhabi University should be responsible for their behaviours while being the part of the University’s community.
The responsible behaviour includes respect for cultural and religious differences, honesty in relation to following the principles of academic integrity, honour and responsible attitude in relation to the University’s property, including facilities and equipment (Academic Integrity Policy, 2011; Code of Conduct, 2013).
Students have rights to be protected from the issues of discrimination, to speak and express opinions freely without violating the current federal or local laws. Moreover, students have rights to be protected from unreasonable search.
There is also a list of procedures associated with the situations when students can violate the principles of the student policy followed in the University.
In this case, students also have rights to be informed about the possible consequences of their actions, to present their own version of the situation. Students’ cases can be discussed involving the advisor or parent and with references to the witnesses’ opinions (Student Code of Conduct Policy, 2011).
To guarantee the secure learning environments and development of the friendly community, the University developed a set of rules for students presented as their responsibilities the violation of which is punished.
Students are prohibited to violate the principles stated in the student policy developed as the code of conduct
- to destroy or steal properties of the University or members of the community,
- to violate the principles of academic integrity,
- to use the University’s computer system inappropriately,
- to disrupt the University’s activities and operations,
- to report false threats for the community and environments,
- to contact media without the University staff’s approval,
- to cause physical harm,
- to organize demonstrations (Student Code of Conduct Policy, 2011).
The range of students’ responsibilities depends on the necessity to provide the safe environments for all the members of the University’s community basing on the strict rules and norms or conduct.
Furthermore, students of Abu Dhabi University are expected to be responsible members not only of the University’s community but also of the local community.
That is why, males and females studying at Abu Dhabi University should also follow the definite dress code (Student Code of Conduct Policy, 2011). Such inappropriate behaviour as smoking is also prohibited in relation to the members of the University’s community.
