Introduction

It is apparent that the emergence of new media has created a new society. Technological changes in the media arena have made the general public adapt and be receptive to the new inventions. One major way in which the society has shifted thanks to the emergence of new media is globalization. The technological advancements in the media front have made it possible for people living in different corners of the globe to know what is happening in other areas. Similarly, the society has become more conscious of the events in far-flung areas as the new media has made it possible to access information in a swift way.

Another reason that justifies that new media has managed to create a new society is the uptake of the concept of pay TV in many parts of the globe. Apparently the recent technology in the television industry is kind of a shift from analog transmission of signals to digital. In this migration, pay-tv decoders have come in handy. This means that more and more people are finding themselves purchasing these gadgets so that they can enjoy the services of television service providers.

Several decades ago, people were not able and willing to dedicate a chunk of their income on the sustainability and reception of quality television signals (Gifford 15). Currently, people do not have qualms spending a fortune so that they can acquire quality television signals.

The emergence of new media has resulted in increased communication especially between people from different corners of the globe. The new media has been able to penetrate and expand the boundaries of nations as people from different nationalities clamor to communicate with one another. The scenario has resulted in decreased prejudices that people from different background inhibit towards one another. Essentially, the new media has made many people become liberal with regards to the manner in which they communicate and interact with strangers.

Technological advancement in the media arena has helped to introduce new norms and behavior in the society. The ease with which the new media can transmit information across the globe has harnessed interaction and exchange of ideas among people of various nationalities and background. It is common to see that a society that was originally known to be conservative has gradually become liberal in the way people think and conduct their affairs. The new media has helped the society to wean off its conservative side and become more open minded with regards to accepting the norms and ideas of other people.

The new media has also shaped and transformed the society on the education front. Modern technology, especially in the television industry, has provided a platform whereby educative programs are aired not only to the students but also to the general population. People have become more knowledgeable thanks to advancement in media technology. Consequently, the information that is availed through the new media has helped the members of the society to improve their economic front(Gifford 15).

The ideas provided in the media platform go a long way in helping the members of the general public acquire the much-needed information with regards to where to invest and also where to channel their energy in.

The emergence of new media has helped create a society that is more politically conscious. The ever changing technology in the media has improved the efficiency and effectiveness through which people are aware of their rights. Consequently, the media has provided a platform with which one society can compare its political rights, values and freedoms with those of other societies. In doing so, the members of the society can know whether they are being oppressed by the political system or not. The Arab uprising that occurred in many Islamic countries towards the beginning of this century has been initiated and fostered by the vibrant and modern media (Dutton 76).

Another way in which the society is influenced by the media is in the aspect of fashion sense and trends. Stakeholders have always emphasized that the modern media greatly influence the course on which fashion is taken in the society. It is common to see a certain type of attire becoming fashionable after the media has portrayed it in the new and positive light to the members of the society. Some habits in the society also become fashionable in the society due to the influence of the media (Thompson 24). Apparently, it has been able to execute this role due to the adoption of modern technology in the industry.

Conclusion

The new media through its ever changing technology has a tremendous effect on the society. In no way the society can influence the course or trend in which the media is supposed to adopt. The scenario is always the other way round whereby it is the media which can manipulate the course of action of the society. The impact of the new media on the society can be very beneficial or detrimental to the society. It is the responsibility of the government to ensure that the new media is used for the benefit of the society.
