Introduction

Terrorism has been in existence in many parts of the world for a very long time. Many people have perceived it as violence especially due to the presence of suicide bombings and inhumane attacks by terror groups. In effect, people have been forced to live in fear and always stay alert due to the uncertainty of terrorism acts. However, despite many groups claiming responsibility for these actions, they are yet to be nabbed and thus still remain at large.

Many of the governments have continued to further terrorism in the name of revenge or protecting their citizens (Marsh, 2005), yet the main sufferers are the innocent in society. In his article, Sardar considers terrorism to include anyone who lives comfortably at the expense of others, a definition that would suit everyone who makes the lives of others miserable and unbearable. However, this is subject to refute since all these governments do is seek supremacy and control the world.

Different perspectives

Sardar (2005), considers those who consume too much, lead an unsustainable lifestyle, exploit non-western economies and hide it as free trade, and want their lifestyle followed as the real terrorists. This means that terrorism starts with peaceful individuals through the injustices and inhumane acts that seem small and justifiable; thus the peaceful man is also a terrorist, the only difference being his perspective.

Those who bomb and kill people through acts of terror normally tend to express their oppression by the governments. They tend to express legitimate issues through a way that makes the governments listen to their cries, a phenomenon that amounts to, according to Sardar (2005), conscious terrorism since they don’t have any other way of reaching the government that is oppressing them and denying them justice. The ‘peaceful terrorist’ on the other hand is filled with greed, a superiority complex, and an un-quenched desire to rule and dominate the whole and entire world; this leads to invincible terrorism. The peaceful terrorist views himself as having the right to be what he is and hence continues to dominate the world. This gives the two sides of both terrorists who have different ambitions and purposes which must be met.

As Sardar (2005) notes, the conscious terrorist kills without discrimination while the invisible terrorist kills en masse. There are too many reasons that make Terrorists be ‘us’. Despite the acts of terrorism being aired by global media, the peaceful terrorist has his share of the blame. He hides in a cocoon trying to defend his acts on the basis of freedom, trade, and democracy, while he still believes in his innocence.

Barr (2004) describes how the definitions are customized to suit the needs of the ‘us’ community by defining terrorism as “the systematic use of violence as a means of intimidating or coercing societies or governments.” This means that they can continue with their acts of terror without being labeled terrorists. He gives an example with the war and invasion of Iraq as a war to fight weapons of mass destruction, a war that has never been dubbed as a terrorist act while it continues to mess the whole country and its citizens who live in abject poverty.

The real meaning

Blood flowing, people dead, property destroyed and millions injured can not be compared to the explanation by either Sadar or Barr. This is more terrifying and outright terrorism which need not be defended. When these bombings occur, many have done it in the name of the following religion or defending a course. This does not justify the killings. They should face the government head-on if they want to express their grievances. Moreover, other channels of negotiations or even using peace may be used to give their grievances.

Terrorist are really not us as described by the authors above. People in these countries have worked hard to earn their wealth and thus the other countries should work for it and not expect to be handed on a silver plate. The actual terrorists hide from reality and fear but the governments never fear. They work openly and transparently.

The definitions in the dictionary suit them exactly although it does not matter what is written but what is done. They should aim at changing their situation rather than attacking innocent hardworking citizens who are on their daily schedules and leaving behind widows, widowers, and orphans when they kill dependants.

Invisible terrorism

Tight trade rules and strict regulations are involved when it comes to trade. This ensures that the countries involved remain competitive and diversified. Many just want to dump their goods in the developed countries due to the availability of high prices. However, these trade rules reduce counterfeit products in the developed countries markets.

The structural adjustments programs are meant for the developing country’s leaders to work on good governance rather than involvement in corruption and embezzlement of funds which creates a cartel and a huge gap between the rich and poor and the gap widens every day due to their greed, inequality, exploitation, impunity, and imperialism. Many of the people from the developing countries ape the culture from the western culture but they are never forced to change their culture and traditions.

These developing countries have rich agricultural land yet they wait for relief food and donations from the developing countries. This means that lack of planning lands them in the sore state they are in. therefore, the justification that the authors give does not qualify to brand anyone an invisible terrorist.

Conclusion

The war on terror as President Bush branded it should continue without any hesitation. All the terrorists should be brought to book and be made answerable for their actions. No amount of distractions should derail the process and the big heads should be gunned down to stop the blood of innocent people from being shed. The actions of the true terrorist prove beyond reasonable doubts that “terrorists are not us”
