Introduction

The act of committing suicide is to terminate one’s life unnaturally through self-destructive means. It is believed that around one million people commit suicide yearly in the world, and this figure includes around 30,000 in the United States alone. (Dryden, 1996-2008). The causes for a person committing suicide may be many including failures, contracting of a painful incurable disease, depression, feeling of being fed up with life, etc. Suicide could also result due to chronic alcoholism, use of strong non-prescription drugs, and sexual failings. Marital discord, withdrawal symptoms, the feeling of loneliness, depressive feelings, and lack of strong social and family support may be contributory factors for suicide.

It is seen that suicide is an unnatural and quick snuffing of life, it is the family members who are most devasted by the passing away of the loved ones through self-destruction. Most of the suicide victims would have been young people in their prime on whom their parents would have placed hopes and aspirations for the future. When school and college students commit suicide, the families become heartbroken and distraught with grief, since the victims did not care to assess the feelings of elders before taking such an extreme step.

It has been found that women are more prone to attempt suicide while males actually commit it.

Methods of committing suicide: The commonest forms of suicide are drowning, Electric shocks, exsanguinations, jumping from heights, inhalation of carbon monoxide, poisoning, handing, overuse of drugs, and gunshots in fatal areas. (Top 10 methods of suicide, 2007).

It is believed that the commonly used weapon for suicide is firearms (60%) which is believed to be quick and less messy. Overdose of drugs and alcohol are also considered prime methods of committing suicide. (What are the possible causes for suicide?).

Influence of factors in suicide

There are several age-related, attitudinal, and psychological factors that impinge upon suicidal tendencies. In some cases, suicide runs in the family and genetic factors reign strong. Therefore, a complete evaluation of the patient, including case history, sexual tendencies, physical and mental health, family support, and community support, these all bear heavily upon the individual.

Other things apart, a person with a strong family and community support and robust mental health, and fairly in command of his impulses would have a lower degree of suicidal tendencies. This is when it is compared to a loner with physical and psychological problems, with a low rate of self-esteem and respect, and who feels that his presence in the world does not make much of difference to anybody- these people have a greater tendency to nurse suicidal tendencies and may also be a prime potential candidate for suicides. Some of the tendencies exhibited by potential suicides are: They try to inform others of their intentions, or even write and register a will with their lawyers regarding property matters, etc. The telltale symptoms of suicides could be in terms of withdrawal and communication breakdown, even with family members and constant behavioral changes, sometimes bordering on extreme emotional distress and distraught conditions.

Often would-be suiciders confide their intentions only to a close associate or friend, just sometime before actually attempting or committing suicide. This may be in terms of not holding anybody else responsible for his or her acts, or to release the burden of carrying suicidal tendencies in their minds.

Mostly, they are people who have some kind of mental or physical problem that needs medical attention who nurse suicidal tendencies. It is more of a mental illness, since the symptoms do not have outward manifestations, and most suicide victims may be normal persons. However, life’s traumas in terms of divorce, unemployment, loss of loved ones, examination failures, and a host of other negative factors may be a precipitating factor for suicidal tendencies and attempts.

It is often found that suicide may not be an escape route but the best way to escape from life’s seemingly insurmountable problems and worries. A potential suicide feels he may not be able to cope with life’s challenges and decides an escape route that could evolve a permanent solution to his problems.

It is important to know that that suicide attempter should not be allowed to remain alone; especially in places where there is scope for committing the offense. (Depression Health Center, 2000-2005). As has been mentioned there are a host of reasons aboding in minds of people who wish to commit suicide or have attempted suicide earlier. It could be as mundane a reason for having failed in an examination or as serious as being a terminally ill AIDS patient. The main factors could be in terms of previous suicide attempts, a grave illness, chronic alcohol, non-prescription drugs, and hallucinative drugs, sexual maladjustments, and lastly and most significantly, feeling of loneliness and worthlessness, etc. This entire factor could be a risk factor in committing suicide.

Methods of preventing suicide

There are several specialized agencies that deal with offering succor to potential suicide victims. There are professional counselors and health care professionals in these organizations who are primarily concerned about community health care and its deleterious impact upon society. Suicidal tendencies among young people are not only of concern from their parents and relatives but also for society as a whole since this is a social problem that affects every aspect of civilized living. Hence these professional workgroups comprising of psychologists, consultant psychiatrists, and medical doctors deal regularly with cases of attempted and potential suicides and the best forms of its alleviation and prevention. When suicidal tendencies are related to alcohol and drug dependencies, specialized treatment in de-addiction and de-toxification centers are offered to assess its root causes and suggest remedial measures.

Suicidal threats may materialize, especially among younger age groups. This is because suicidal tendencies have the tendency of increasing in intensity and belief over a period depending upon the external environment and the individual’s predisposition and attitudes, combined with his increasing feeling of personal insecurity and loneliness. It is important that any medical intervention or medication first needs to address the root cause of the suicidal illness and eliminate it. Unless the root causes are identified and specially treated, the symptoms could override the condition and create further complications for treatment. Further, the health care authorities who are responsible for the patient’s health, immediate family members, friends, associates, well-wishers should be in a position to offer robust social support and security.

Moreover, cases of suicidal risks need to be treated in health care centers with psychiatric evaluation, monitoring, medication, and health care intervention before they are released to perform useful roles in society.

Conclusion

This writer believes that that suicide is not an act but a mental condition that manifests itself in self-destructive motives. What health care professionals need to adopt is a holistic approach based on preventive and prophylactic care in order to address the root causes of suicidal tendencies and how they could be identified and treated. For instance, certain psychotic drugs induce highly hallucinative and pleasure evoking senses in the minds of their users. The trances users’ experiences completely eliminate pain and worries which is a part of everyday living. The users wish to be permanently under the pleasure zones of these drugs, failing which they exhibit extreme suicidal tendencies and harbor suicidal thoughts. It is necessary that detoxification takes care of such addictions and helps victims to live normal lives.
