Relevance of Standards
The Common Core Standards is the centerpiece of industry standards in education in the United States. These determine the knowledge that students in grades K-12 should possess in English and Maths per the respective curriculums. The standards cover aspects of reading, writing, language arts, as well as a variety of mathematical logic, content, and tools. Common core standards are both relevant and important as they provide clear and consistent guidelines and expectations for all involved stakeholders in education such as teachers, students, parents, and schools. These clearly outlined skills and knowledge parameters are aligned across states and educational institutions, thus allowing for collaboration, standardization of comprehensive assessment, and development of appropriate teaching material. In turn, the standards are meant to establish learning programs and help prepare students for success in college and professional careers by establishing a systematic approach to education (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2019).
Application of Standards
The attached evidence to the portfolio defines an understanding or application of the Common Core Standards in practice. The first assignment is curriculum recommendations for K-1 students at a magnet school. It comprehensively outlines the demographics of the school, the purpose of the curriculum, types of assessments, and how everything helps to meet the institution’s goals. It is a similar process that governing bodies and schools follow to create and adopt a curriculum to adhere to standards while meeting unique school objectives. Another attached assignment is a case study regarding “terms of endearment,” an examination of racially-based relations and communication that is ongoing in the classroom. While not directly related to Common Core Standards, it is vital to their implementation and how students and teachers interact in the complex socio-political environment of modern times. Education and demographics are closely intertwined, and necessary to be studied for the success of delivering the curriculum. Overall, these assignments greatly contribute to the understanding and application of Common Core Standards and their importance in real-world education environments.
