Introduction
The work is devoted to the issue of the coexistence of Taiwan and Mainland China as a single nation. While the Chinese Government is relentlessly fighting for the full unification of the two countries, Taiwan continues its separatist policy aimed at creating two Chinas. The difference in views on the continued existence of both countries called into question the possibility of an amicable solution to the conflict and marked a threat to stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
Discussion
The Taiwan issue is a problem that arose during the Chinese Civil War. Although the Government of the People’s Republic of China has all the sovereign rights of China, including the sovereign right to Taiwan, the hostility between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait has not yet officially stopped. The Chinese Government sticks to peaceful unification, stating that the way to solve the Taiwan issue is an internal matter of China. Taiwan deliberately violates the One China principle, seeking to turn Taiwan into an independent political entity.
Geographically, Taiwan is an integral part of Chinese territory since China’s sovereignty over Taiwan remains unchanged. International law and the legal acts of China determine the status of Taiwan as part of the territory of China, which excludes the possibility of a referendum on self-determination. It is also impossible to use the “two Germanys” model due to fundamental geographical and historical differences. Taiwan is not a participant of the UN and other international organizations, whose members can only be sovereign states. Although the Taiwanese authorities are trying to expand the global space, the Chinese Government does not approve of this but does not object to informal economic and cultural contacts (Hartnett, 2021).
Conclusion
Currently, Taiwan remains under the name “Taipei of China” in the International Olympic Committee. In general, the unification of the two Chinas looks like the most effective solution to many urgent problems.
