The Importance of Grammar in Academic Writing and Communication Essay

Introduction

The article “Welcome Back, My Ungrammatical Students” by Mark Goldblatt was written on September 3, 2013. The author dedicated his article to the importance of learning grammar in depth. He argues that in college, it is not enough to be able to form thoughts. People need to know all the rules of punctuation, grammar, and the use of word forms. Each language stands out for its specific characteristics. Grammar provides an identity of perception. With it, the text will look beautiful and read correctly. Thus, I agree with the author’s opinion that grammar is an integral part of the use of language; the student must be perceived as an educated person.

Article Analysis

First, the author considers ignoring textual faults permissible in social media. In contrast, the author notes, “Unlike your friends, who will excuse your errors, your college professor may or may not like you” (Goldblatt 1). I agree with the author’s opinion, as grammar is necessary for full communication in an academic setting. Grammar generates more discussion and debate than any other topic of language learning. In my experience, because of the generalizable nature of its laws, grammar makes the path to language acquisition easier and helps convey meaning accurately, determining the importance of learning grammar.

The author argues that in addition to good grammar, one needs to write a text to be persuasive and coherent. The author writes: “Competent grammar is grammar you do not notice”(Goldblatt 1). I agree with this statement because if a person is distracted by grammar, they need help understanding the order of words or sentences. Many people like to put commas in all the wrong places, thinking that their intuition will satisfy them, which can confuse the reader. Thus, the grammar must be correct for the article or essay to be read quickly and convincingly.

Conclusion

Thus, the article in question agrees with my beliefs about the importance of grammar. The acquisition of some grammatical structure of the language ensures the expression of thoughts in oral and written form and their comprehension by hearing and reading. Learning English grammar helps students become more aware of the grammatical structure of the language. If students do not think seriously about the importance of grammar, the use of language in academic space will soon become similar to how it is used in social media. This will cause people to forget formal communication, stop showing respect, and lose motivation to develop.
