Impression management is the process by which people control the images they portray to others. This article has helped me understand that an individual’s impression plays a crucial role in their lives. Leary and Kowalski (1990) explain that individuals try to create images about their personal attributes, moods, beliefs, status, or attitudes. Impression management incorporates two models, including image construction, where a person determines and chooses how to portray certain impressions. Appearance motivation involves how people manage their look before others.
Most people focus on high-valued images that enhance their well-being. For example, they choose impressions that boost their material and social outcomes, self-esteem, and identity (Leary & Kowalski, 1990). Individuals might concentrate on creating a pleasing appearance before others but pay little attention to understanding their thoughts. However, it is essential to know that image management can adversely affect an individual’s life. For example, people’s behaviors can create an unpleasant image to other people and adversely affect their self-esteem and identity.
