Introduction
This is a review of the paper written by Emiko Mori. I will be discussing the relevance of Nonverbal communication over Verbal communication. Also, the importance of Non-verbal communication will be highlighted in the paper. The difference between Verbal and Nonverbal communication is discussed and the superior abilities of nonverbal communication will also be emphasized upon. How nonverbal communication can be an easy, trusted, and clear way of communication is also mentioned. This review is the review of the paper written by Kamaka (2008).
Research Question
As the research question goes: The Influence of Nonverbal Communication, even without knowing much about the topic, one can rightly discuss and talk about the various aspects related to Nonverbal communication. It’s not necessary to have a deep knowledge of the topic since it is something that we come across in every walk of life daily. Every human is supposed to communicate with Nonverbal communication since everybody on earth does not speak the same language. Hence, it can be said that the particular research question was rightly and clearly stated. The influence of Nonverbal communication is very great over Verbal communication.
Communication Theories
In the following paper, the communication theory used is Interpretative and Interaction Theories. Paul Watzlawick gave this theory. His theory has five axioms; namely- One can not communicate, which means that even though one is not talking or saying something, still the person is communicating. Even silence is considered a way of communication. The next axiom is- Human beings communicate both digitally and analogically. Here, verbal communication comes under digital and Nonverbal communication comes under analog communication. The third axiom is- Communication = Content + Relationship. The content and relationship make up a communication sequence. The fourth axiom is- The nature of the relationship depends on how both parties punctuate the communication sequence and the last axiom is- All communication is either Symmetrical or Complementary.
Other Communication Theories
Another communication theory that could have been used for the review is- Communication Processes. This communication theory could also have been used as a better source to comprehend the fieldwork of communication. Under the theory- Communication Processes- Burgoon, Jones, and Stewart (1975) have said that- strategic linguistic choices can be significant predictors of persuasive success.
Research Cited
The difference between Verbal and Nonverbal Communication has been given in terms of- words and majority. The importance of Nonverbal communication has also been emphasized upon under- interaction primacy, multifunctional, universal language, phylogenetic primacy, ontogenetic primacy, expression, believable, encoding and decoding, and lastly, judgment and expectancies. The three superior qualities of Nonverbal communication and Nonverbal communication namely- the majority of Nonverbal communication, communication without language and trusted, easy and clear way of communication have also been done full justice to. Hence, the research cited was completely qualitative. Quantitative research is not always qualitative.
Gaps in the Literature
On examining and evaluating the topics and the idea covered in the paper, one can conclude that every plausible and possible way to express the required concept, every available way to put the correct and exact evidence has been successfully done and accomplished. There are no such gaps in the paper.
Claims and Evidence
Based on the ideas given in the paper regarding Verbal and Nonverbal communication, one can claim that the conclusions are sound and adequate which rightly provide a wide spectrum of differences between Verbal and Nonverbal communication. The evidence also provide a large number of references that further strengthen the concept of Nonverbal communication being an inseparable part of our daily communication procedure. It is hence rightly said that Nonverbal communication has innumerable advantages and needs over Verbal communication most importantly in the case when two people don’t speak the same language. In the case of babies, who have only the Nonverbal way to communicate with their parents is also stated. This proves the influence of Nonverbal communication over Verbal one.
Recommendations for Future Research
For future research, one can include the various points revealing the nature of Nonverbal or even Verbal communication that takes place between males and females to give the research a meaningful turn. The differences between how the two genders communicate, be it verbally or non-verbally can be taken into consideration.
Conclusion
Most interpersonal meanings between parties in communication are nonverbal. Also, even though it’s not necessary that the two parties which are in the process of communication speak the same language, here, nonverbal communication plays a massive role. Besides, it is a very trusted, clear, and better way to communicate when language becomes a barrier. Even though one is not speaking in words, he/she is still communicating but non-verbally. It is an indispensable way of communication and also undelivered.
