Every human being is bestowed with some duties and responsibilities in life. In order to be able to meet the requirements of the duties and to discharge those effectively, all individuals must possess appropriate skills. The skill level and variety, of course, differ from person to person. An individual with good skills will put up a better performance than someone who lacks that ability. It can, therefore, be inferred that the skills a person possesses determine his or her success, to a great extent. There are certain skills that almost all people use, which aid them in the fulfillment of their obligations in their everyday life. On the other hand, there are some skills that only a few people possess, but at the same time that particular skill can be helpful to everybody. However, if those who lack such a skill take necessary initiatives to learn it, they can master it by practice and tap the benefits deriving from the use of that skill. In this context, ‘writing’ is a skill that most people do not happen to be blessed with, but if they practice the art, they will be able to master it and reap all the benefits accruing from it.
Communication plays an important role in human life. Therefore, the ability to communicate well is a trait that helps people to adequately stand up to their responsibilities and discharge their duties efficiently. Writing is one of the most significant means of communication in the modern world. Whether it is a student, a business man, an employee, or a person engaged in any other occupation, writing forms an integral part of their every day activity. In order for a person to be effective in his job, he or she needs to possess good writing skills. Then only that person will be able to express his or her ideas to others and get the works executed in the desired manner. People who do not possess good writing skills may not be able to communicate exactly what they intend, to the audience they are addressing. Such a lack of adequate writing skills may entail in a communication gap, which in turn, can result in misunderstanding or misinterpretation of a message.
In today’s world people confront the necessity for writing something at various stages of their lives or career. It may be an e-mail message, a normal letter, a report, putting up a complaint etc. But whatever the form is, proper writing skills will help them to convey their meaning and intention in the best manner to the persons to whom they addresses the message. A properly written message evokes suitable reactions in the reader and helps him understand the content just as well as the sender of the message has perceived it. On the other hand, if a person with poor writing skills writes a message, the person who receives the message will find it difficult to comprehend the meaning, or misinterpret it, or may lose interest in it and just ignore it. It is a well known fact that an interesting piece of writing, compiled with good skills, will hold the reader’s attention, generate emotions in him, and it is the only way one can make the process of communication become meaningful and effective.
In the competitive world of today, proper writing skills are inevitable not only for the professionals but also for students. All working people will face the need to write a letter, memorandum or report to his senior person. Similarly, people who hold top positions in management will feel the need to pass on written instructions to their junior staff. In both cases, the messages need to be drafted carefully, and if the person who initiates the message does not have suitable skills he or she may not be able to come up with a proper letter or report. If such a communication is poorly prepared, it will only fetch negative reaction. Similarly, if a report, initiated by a junior staff, is not well written, it won’t impress the top management and instead will offend them. The same is the case with students also. Those students who possess good writing skills will naturally fare well in their studies where as students who are wanting in this skill will not be doing so good in the class. There is no doubt that for students, writing skill is a very significant aspect in their academic life as they have to do a lot of writing projects like essays, theses, dissertations etc. Only students who have mastered the skill of writing can do the required projects objectively and attain good grades. Thus it becomes evident that only students who possess adequate writing skills will be able to stand up to the expectations that the university or professors bestow on them.
From the above, it becomes apparent that writing is a skill that only few individuals possess. However, this is a trait that will help every person to excel in his field due to the prominence of written communication in today’s world. A person who lacks proper skills may face several adversities in our society. Therefore, it is necessary that people develop adequate writing skills through learning and practice. Systematic learning and regular practice will definitely help in developing a person’s writing skills or honing up the existing skills. Thus a person who doesn’t have this quality can also become a good writer and tap the benefits of being a person with proper communication skills if he or she is willing to learn and dedicate some time and efforts.
